Emergency for athens + patras imc

Athens & Patras IMC Collective

A period of generalized suppression and state brutality has followed the December Rebellion. During and after the rebellion, the political far right party LA.O.S and the Greek State decided to exert pressure on Indymedia (Athens & Patras), on the basis that it was used as center of coordination of the Rebellion (rebellions can not, of course, be carried out through the internet), deliberately ignoring the contribution of Indymedia to counter-information.

Attacks have been launched against Athens Indymedia by fascists and members of the right and far right parties of the parliament. Fascists tried to foist their propaganda on the right wing government through their blogs and trouble the site through hacking attempts. Politicians' statements in the parliament and telecasts targeted Indymedia as a main enemy of the state.

Their most dangerous move was the interpellation submitted to the Ministry of Education by K. Velopoulos, member of LA.O.S. He asked the minister of Education whether Athens and Patras Indymedia are hosted in the NTUA and called for immediate actions to stop these “dangerous”, “terrorism supporting” etc sites.

The under-Secretary of Education, S. Taliadouros, readily agreed with Velopoulos that “these sites pose a threat for democracy” and called the doyen/dean of NTUA to shut it down. Ignoring the autonomy status of the greek universities, all kinds of political and judicial pressure have been put on the university authorities in order to remove our ip address. We were already warned that even if the university stands up to the minister there other ways to shut us down

A member of the far right part, LA.O.S,has launced a new attack against athens indymedia,He has question in the parlament, that says that the National Tecnical University of Athens gives access to athens indymedia for purposes that has nothing to do with research and education.

The Hellenic National Organization of Telecomunication dispatched a judicial document at the National Network of Research and Technology, asking to interrupt the access of Athens Indymedia to the network of optical fibres of the organism in five days. The Hellenic Organization of Telecomunication acclaimed that will use every legal right against the national network of research and technology,if it doesn'stop the access to athens indymedia.

The social liberty status of all greek universities forbids the entrance and intervention of the police in the university area, in order to prevent the enforcement of state authority and censorship of academic and political activities and ideas that flourish in the universities. This status was claimed and defended through the years by the vast majority of the people and the blood of many of our comrades.

The only law that can be enforced by the state in order to break the social liberty of the university and shut down Athens Indymedia is the counter-terrorism law (voted in 2001). Given the fact that young comrades (some of them underaged) were prosecuted by this law during the December Rebellion, in Larissa, (first time that it is applied for protesters), we face it as a probable scenario.

For all this reasons we ask you if it`s possible hospitality Athens & Patras indymedia websites in your server .
because we need to preserve it , especially when it is closed or is about to be closed.
and to counteract censorship and promote freedom of information.

Athens and Patras Indymedia (along with other European Indymedia and revolutionary sites that are hosted on the same server) face a serious threat of suppression. It is up to the Movement and our comrades all over the world to support and protect our voice. We call our comrades upon a readiness state, since the next time period is critical for the existence of Indymedia in Greece.

With our warmest comradely greetings
