NCC 'Proud of You' awards

Andy | 02.07.2009 14:56 | Energy Crisis | Repression

Let's nominate an activist for one of these awards

Nottingham City Council is launching its 'Proud of You' awards in the Market Square next week

 http://www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=6007

One of the awards is for a 'Champion of the Environment'. I thought it might be an idea to start a campaign to nominate a radical activist for the award. My first thought was to nominate one of the 114 arrested at the Iona school back in April.

However, I don't know any of them so have no idea if any of them would be willing to be involved (understandably they might not be considering bail conditions etc) but if anybody does know them maybe you could ask?

Alternatively, anybody got any other ideas for a suitable candidate?

Champion of the Environment

I nominate St Patrick Smith esq as our local champion of the environment.

He also likes 50's rock & roll & knows who Buddy Holly is, which is an added bonus for me.

Yours

Nigel Lee, Friends of Earth, for decades of thankless background

work& best knowledge of eastcroft incinerator & other issues. Someone respected & with the ear of people from top to bottom through sheer hard work. Was one of main people who got through nottingham councils commitments on climate change & peak oil.

Kate milman or her partner nick robson are the best candidates, she & nick from Wildthings encouraged people to keep the rainbow sumac centre going in the 1990s when loads of people disappeared& have sorted out alot since then.
Bestwood park wouldnt be there, it would just be a rat run for a miserable quarry in it if it wasnt for them.
Whenever shit hits the fan, their usually nearby. Whenever theirs a protest camp, theyve usually been there. The current Luddites running Sumac wouldnt be there if it hadnt been for them & their hard rockin.
Alot more fascists would be in nottingham if they hadnt come here also.

Has anyone who wants to vote for someone in particular travelled closely with him without being under some kind of spell, sedatioin or drug for a long period?.
Its been tediously close to curtains many, many times, despite offers of help, he needs to take a step back, he doesnt need encouragment in killing himself & a van load in a rush again to sell literally afew extras on site. Thats as nice as it can be put.

Longterm voluntary workers need rights& a contract everywhere

04.07.2009 20:54

so if any occasionally problems come up they can be dealt with privately or arbitrated. THere are good unions that have places like Sumacs best interests at heart like IWW & others.Voluntary work increases during recession, these workers need support everywhere.
It need to happen before & after any revolution, some larger cooperatives may not be vegan, but their more sustainable in the true sense of the word & they put workers health &safety & being a member of a union higher & do extremely well.

Veggies is a amazing organisation, the Sumacs even better.
Many people including myself have spent years helping keep it going day in,day out over last 2 decades,
into the small hours like many others, behind the scenes.
It wasnt started by the saint or Messiah esq, it was already going.

WE DON`T NEED ANOTHER HERO,
WE DON`T NEED TO KNOW THE WAY HOME,
ALL WE WANT IS LIFE BEYOND THUNDERDOME,

We need fairer deals for the millioins of heros out there, not more rewards for a few people.
VOLUNTARY WORKERS SHOULD DEMAND CONTRACTS OR REFUSE THEIR LABOUR. Unions should also start demanding that voluntary workers have contracts, otherwise what are voluntary workers paying them for???

Nominate a group

07.07.2009 15:04

You can just nominate a group, not make a difference but a good wind up.

A better idea I thought to show our support for the 47 activists who are still being charged would be for people to hand themselves into the central police station on mass for thought crimes. If a lot of us did this just before the court hearings and got the media involved, then it would make a point.

I have thought many times about riding my bike on the pavement in Nottingham, I feel I need to be punished ;-)
