I.D. Cards For Foreigners Only

The announcement that no "UK Citizen" will be required to carry an I.D. Card, was given a brief and apparently uncontroversial sub-clause "except for foreign workers".

Congratulations first to the campaign being fought by the unions and No2ID - they seem to be winning. Except that it, for Foreign Workers. It seems to be unquestioned that foreigners should be made carry the card.

Many of those who work at airports (those working airside were the target of the first round of compulsory I.D.) will be foreign workers, so it would be nice if the rich members of Balpa - the pilots union - would come out in support of the cleaners who are much likely to be foreign and obviously much lower paid. Equally, maybe UNITE could mount a campaign to help foreign workers? But given their half-hearted support for many of the cleaner campigns such as the Amey and Mitie workers, that seems unlikely.

West Yorkshire police have been storing DNA samples from suspects and car crash victims in a freezer also used for ice cream, a watchdogs' report has said.
