Topical

This is an unimportant comment about posting articles here. Feel free to hide it as 'non-news' as it is just a general comment, but it is one quandary most punters here have faced. I am interested in what other non-IMCistas who post here think about the categories for new posts here.

These are the current topics:

Analysis
Animal Liberation
Anti-militarism
Anti-racism
Bio-technology
Climate Chaos
Culture
Ecology
Education
Energy Crisis
Free Spaces
Gender
Globalisation
Health
History
Indymedia
Iraq
Migration
Ocean Defence
Other Press
Palestine
Repression
Social Struggles
Technology
Terror War
Workers' Movements
Zapatista

I realise every topic can't be listed individually, and I think those sum up most of the posts here most of the time, but I think if it is easy to reprogram then IM-UK should consider an open category that people can type in and tag for themselves.

For instance, from my own point of view as someone whose primary issue I post about is stopping the resource wars, how do I label an article that is specifically about the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan rather than the now almost defunct British involvement in Iraq? There is a great deal of overlap in those issues, but for the UK to be combat fighting in Helmand without any recognition here that that is often a different issue seems amiss. We invaded Afghanistan before we invaded Iraq and there is no indication we are pulling our troops back from there so why isn't that category at least listed as Iraq/Afghanistan. Is 'Terror War' meant to cover the Afghanistan occupation?

Has the fact that the ongoing war in Afghanistan was portrayed as less controversial in the mainstream media influenced IM-UKs choice of categories. I am sure other punters here with different issues that aren't accurately represented would also like the chamce to contribute their opinions for the IMCistas to consider during your next meeting. That is my POV, I'm sure activists with other priorities are sometimes similarly flummoxed when faced with the IM-UK tick-boxes.

I am going to submit this under the topic 'Indymedia' and 'Analysis', which for this petty comment seems perfectly accurate, but I hope you bear in mind you could allow people to choose their own tags if none of the existing suggestions fit.
