Join the fight to bring train fares down

Campaign for Better Transport | 15.06.2009 12:43 | Climate Chaos

We’ve always suspected that when planes and trains compete for our business, planes fight dirty. We were right. It’s now been captured on camera!

Train v plane: fair fight?
Train v plane: fair fight?

UK train fares are the most expensive in Europe and the Government wants to make passengers pay even more. Campaign for Better Transport are asking the Government to tax the fuel used for domestic flights - which would make up for any money lost by reduced train fares.

You can join the fight by watching train and plane battle for your business at www.bettertransport.org.uk/train-fares, join the campaign and then send the video round to your friends.

Campaign for Better Transport fights for transport that increases people’s quality of life and reduces the impact on the environment

Daft

"Let's campaign for lower airfares by lobbying for an increased tax on aviation."

No one seriously thinks that increasing the tax burden on the traveller is going to affect the fares set by a privately owned train company. Campaign for renationalisation, or highly subsidised fares, by all means, but don't use it as an excuse for yet another Plane Stupid protest.

Gov't sets fares

Don't be daft: regulated fares are set each year or so by the Government. Unregulated fares aren't, but there's no reason why they couldn't or shouldn't be when those franchises get renegotiated.

Basically the Government is hiring these companies to run the rail service for us. If it decides that the fares are too high, it can do lots of things to lower them.

Not daft
