Swan Housing, other "social landlords" slammed by George Galloway

Matt | 13.06.2009 12:32 | Free Spaces | Repression | Social Struggles

Social landlords Swan Housing, Old Ford Housing, One Housing and East End Homes have been named and shamed by MP George Galloway in an Early Day Motion filed in Commons on June 11th, 2009.

Specifically noting the "lavish bribes" used to entice residents to transfer, the motion goes on further to note extreme unhappiness of many residents on these estates.

In Tower Hamlets resident dissatisfaction with Swan Housing and other social landlords has reached such a fever pitch that future transfers of council housing stock is now forbidden.

The Early Day Motion specifically notes that

“Residents now living under many of the social landlords are extremely unhappy over charges and services. The list of social landlords with which there is the greatest dissatisfaction includes Swan Housing Association, Old Ford Housing Association, One Housing Group and East End Homes."

The Early Day Motion also urges that essential legislation be passed “urgently” to, render social landlords directly accountable to residents and to their local authorities.

We have a group calling themselves justice not crisis, who are led by two individuals from a housing association called Optima. One of whom is an ex-cop. The group claims to be using squatting to set up social centres, but they always demand the land/housing they've occupied be turned over to their housing association. Justice not Crisis is run hierarchically and does not use consensus decision making.

How's that for peverting any libertarian model of social centres?!

in north wales i took my RSL to court for living in what i call a shit hole, despite getting the local E/Health dept involved, they to could not care less, lots of people will not speak out of term against there landlords for fear of eviction.
these landlords should be accountable to the people who live in shit conditions, but are not, and they want the council housing, what will happen if we let them, WORSE CONDITIONS THAN BEFOR?

Wulvern Housing in Crewe/ Cheshire. Lets tenants be exposed to asbestos and contravenes all the regulations on asbestos control. Allows tenants to be harassed and then gives out their personal details. They are ignorant of the Data Protection Act too.

Housing 21 who let properties that are unfit to live in. Damp and structural defects that are not repaired.
