Demand Police Accountability: End the harassment of public protests

Meirion | 10.06.2009 12:57 | Climate Chaos | Other Press

Protest at Notts Police Authority meeting on June 24 at 9.30am County Hall Trent Bridge. The 'POLICE SCANDAL' of 'Operation Aeroscope' and it's cost to the public, needs a public protest.

Demend Police Authority make Police Accountable for their actions. Make Police Chiefs pay from their own pockets!

None of the 114 people arrested have so far been charged with an offence following the controversial operation. Notts police face a £700,000 bill after the arrest of 114 eco-protesters in Nottingham.

More than 200 officers swooped on Iona School in Sneinton in April amid claims climate change protestors there posed a "serious threat" to Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station.

Police from Notts, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and British Transport Police were involved in the arrests shortly after midnight on April 13.

None of the 114 people arrested have so far been charged with an offence following the controversial operation.

Demend or Demand ?

Once is a typo, but twice ?

Maybe I'm in the wrong and I just don't know what a Demend is.

Who do they work for?

To put this in context.
The police had information which led them to suspect that a large group of people were going to attempt to get inside Ratcliffe on Soar power station and disrupt its operation.
All the police had to do was to tip off E-on so they could close their security gates and make sure they have security staff on duty. A couple of coppers then knock on the door of the premises where the demonstrators are gathering to tell them the cops know of their plan. The police say the raid was intelligence lead so they will know that the protesters are not violent so there is no need for much physical back-up; once they know they are rumbled the protesters will abandon the action.
Cost to public purse – minimal. No need to spend £700,000 on shipping in scores of officers from several forces on a bank holiday.
The whole incident raises many questions which can be debated elsewhere but the casual manner in which the police choose to waste huge amount of tax-payers money is yet another example of the police out of control. We should be angry and we should be at their doors to let them know how we feel.
See you at County Hall on the 24th June
(not one of 114)

to be fair

If ten protesters had shown up then yes, if 1000 had turned up a few security blokes are not going to be much use, and it's not as if "orderly protest" is the order of the day at the moment.
dambed if they do dambed if they dont. Caught between a piss poor government and an angry public.

Bet they wish they were tube drivers.

No, if you visit the E-on site you will se that it is surrounded my extensive security fencing and gates at all entry points. A couple of dozen security atff and a a couple of coppers could secure it against thousands of protesters.

The police still cannot explain why they needed to waste huge sums of money I would rather was spent on child services, nurses, care for the elderly.........

"if you visit the E-on site you will se that it is surrounded my extensive security fencing and gates at all entry points"

I have 'visited' the site and it's wide the fuck open if you know where to go in and out (hint - not the main entrance)

"A couple of dozen security atff and a a couple of coppers could secure it against thousands of protesters"
