Jerusalem is the Capital of Arab culture for 2009. It succeeds Damascus. The launch of the celebrations and programme of events was delayed until March due to the War on Gaza and the difficulties Palestinians experience holding any events in Jerusalem. While Israel attempts to erase Jerusalem's Palestinian and Arab heritage, Birmingham will be celebrating its Arab and Palestinian heritage and culture with 'Hallo Jerusalem', Capital of Arab Culture 2009.
The Midlands Palestinian Community Association (UK) is organising a night of celebration in Partnership with the Drum, the National Centre for Black British Arts and Culture from 7:30 on the 10th of July in Birmingham.
This evening of cultural solidarity with the future Capital of Palestine will feature musicians and writers from Birmingham including Ben Okafor, reggae band Rockstone and Y2K, sufi rock band Silk Road and Blues guitarist Joe Beale, Kokumo and the multicultural voices of Writers Without Borders. The evening will also feature Alzaytouna Nottingham Dabka Group.
We hope to raise funds to support a Palestinian charity or organisation that works to maintain and enrich the Palestinian Arab identity of Jerusalem. This should be a truly memorable night.
Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment, especially if you are traveling from outside Birmingham either online at http://www.the-drum.org.uk/event/hallo-jerusalem or by telephone on 0121 3332444. The tickets are £9 if you are in work or £6 if you are not.
