Tubeworkers Strike Support Group

Freedom | 04.06.2009 21:43 | Workers' Movements

Freedom newspaper was present at the meeting to set up a support group for the tube workers and their up and coming strike.

Supporting the tube workers, old skool

There was a good attendance - over 50 people present; RMT union reps, tubeworkers, along with comrades from IWW, Solfed and Haringey Solidarity Group with a positive, angry and militant atmosphere.

Background: RMT tube workers will be holding a 48 hr strike starting 7pm on June 9th over compulsory redundancies and an enforced 5 year pay deal. Beyond that it's Boris's attempt to break the strength of the tubeworkers (pretensions of Thatcher and the miners) and as such has far reaching implications.

It was clear from the meeting the tubeworkers are looking for active support beyond the union structure. Suggestions involved leafleting tube stations in the run up to the strike informing people about the reasons for the strike, leafleting during the strike as well as organised picket line support. It was also made clear the support group should be independent from the RMT.

An email list has been set to aid communication and the organising process of the support group as well as 2 websites to cover the strike:
www.supportthetubestrikes.org.uk (which'll be up and running soon) and
www.rmtlondoncalling.org.uk (which is essentially for RMT/tube workers as a means of general update, although anyone can register)

RMT leaflets and stickers (Support the Tube/TfL Strikes) are available from RMT HQ @Unity House, 39 Charlton St, NW1 1JD and can be picked up anytime.

Info and updates as they develop.

Just prior to the ballot the RMT announced that nearly 10,000 of its members would be voting. In fact, just 3,298 participated with just over a quarter of its members in favour of striking (2,810).

Arnie's right: A massive 4% DID NOT WANT TO STRIKE!

06.06.2009 06:02

arnie's absolutely right.

But using his logic a tiny 4% were not in favour of striking. That's 448 members out of 10,000 who voted not to strike. Make of it what you will.

Go to work you lazy bums

As a few lazy bastard tube workers can cause so much disruption to other people who want to go to work, I'm now persuaded that it's time to bring in New York style laws.

1. Transport strikes must be outlawed.
2. Individuals who strike will be held responsible for £25,000 per day.
3. Jail if you don't pay up.

If you don't want the job, leave.

You will get no sympathy from people who want to go to work, you fucking lazy bums.

I see censorship is alive and well at Indymedia

I wrote a comment earlier which has been removed, no doubt because it does not fit in with the political affiliations of Indymedia.

This strike has only one intention: to cause disruption and problems for people who want to get to work. I cannot support that.

Indymedia, if you have any balls at all, please put my earlier post back up and stop acting like you are some Stasi news agency.

Kirk

stasi...

The intention of the strike is workers rights, nothing to do with "causing disruption and problems for people who want to get to work".

Try acting in solidarity with them maybe?

Also hiding your (irrelevant) post is in no way comparable to the stasi, as you are well aware.
