Was Ireland's 1916 Easter Rising justified? A debate, 28 May

Socialist republican | 22.05.2009 15:30

A debate on Irish history and politics.

7.30pm, Thursday 28 May
The Lucas Arms, 245a Grays Inn Road (Kings Cross)

93 years ago, Irish Republican and socialist revolutionaries organised an uprising against British imperialism, the Easter Rising. Though it preceded the struggle which eventually freed most of Ireland from British rule, at the time it won little popular support and was crushed easily. So was the Rising justified?

YES: Sean Matgamna, Workers' Liberty
NO: Ruth Dudley Edwards, historian and author

We will also discuss what the history can tell us about the politics
of Ireland and Northern Ireland today.

It was Duty

When a Nation is conquered and ocupied it is the duty of Citizens to throw out the occupying forces. No justification called for. Not to resist is to volunteer to have your Nation genocided.

Whether the Easter Rising was worth it, as it went on to DeValera knowingly allowing the murder of Michael Collins so that DeValera gained political power, is a better question. It is certainly a lesson about the nature of Politicians, and an ineradicable blot on Ireland.

Unable to get to the meeting, perhaps there will be an impartial report here or on  http://www.workersliberty.org/
