NPOIU Pops Up In Brighton Mags Court Hearing

mr e | 19.05.2009 23:10 | Smash EDO | Anti-militarism | Terror War | South Coast

4 defendants on trial this week for alleged offences connected to the June 2008 Brighton Carnival against the Arms Trade were blessed with a court visit by the secretive National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU).

Known for their management of covert surveillance operations targetting political 'subversives' they were not being very covert this time around.

In amongst the usual bevy of haggard plain clothes detectives who like to sit in on Smash EDO related cases, was one young woman wearing a ID lanyard, shamelessly bearing the letters 'NPOIU'.

She attended two days running and kept close eye on a Public Interest Immunity (PII) application by the defence for a hand written Sussex Police intelligence threat assessment of the demo. The report was eventually released with redactions made including several whole pages of the document, most likely covert source intelligence that the police are doing their best to keep under wraps.

The case continues...
