Rob Williams spoke at a rally of Linamar workers and union members on Sunay 17th May to remind everyone of the need to fight to protect workers' rights, pay and conditions.
Linamar bosses wanted a union rep who was prepared to allow the reduction of pay and working conditions and less rights. Rob wasn't prepared to allow that, so the bosses sacked him. When discussing the prospect of being taken to an employment tribunal, Linamar bosses are quoted as saying they have 'costed it'. In other words, they have decided they can afford a tribunal defeat. They can afford to break employment laws and treat workers however they want.
The one thing a tribunal cannot do is order Linamar to reinstate Rob, and in the long run stop many other companies who are thinking of doing the same by sacking other union reps.
As usual, members of the SWP and the Socialist Party were there, and will continue to do whatever it takes to support Williams and the Linamar workers and ensure their victory.
Three MPs from the main political parties (except the Tories) also attended and spoke a few lines about the right to protest.
