Jobs protests sweep Europe

"Europe’s workers are getting ever more riled about the slumping economies and job losses around the continent. There were big rallies in Madrid and Bucharest on thursday. Today it is Brussels’ turn, and on Saturday it will be Berlin."

"Tens of thousands of demonstrators turned up in Madrid, and from all over Europe in a gesture of pan-European trade unionism, and solidarity with Spanish workers, whose construction-dependent economy has been particularly badly-hit by the recession. There were similar scenes in the Rumanian capital..."

Yesterday (14/05/09) there was a strike in Greece where all flights were cancelled. There is a big strike in Croatia and protests in Poland due to major yards closing down by EU order. There are strikes in Turkey and medical strike in Portugal.

Luxemburg protesters attacked the company offices of the world's biggest steal producers - ArcelorMittal. The last 3-4 days have see blockades in Sofia, capital of Bulgaria, due to the work protests. And the tention is high in Russia due to job losses."
