Death of a Tunisian woman at Ponte Galeria detention centre in Rome: another victim of state murder.
Nabruka Mimuni, a 44 year old woman, died sometime during the night of 6th-7th May, while in the the detention centre.
She was taken into detention two weeks ago, directly from a queue where she'd been waiting to have her visa renewed. She was told that she would be deported to Tunisia on Thursday 7th, despite having lived in Italy since the mid '80s.
Rather than be forcibly sent back to a country where she has no connections, she chose to kill herself.
Other detainees at Ponte Galeria have taken action since her death, going on hunger strike to protest not only her treatment but also the inhuman conditions, abuse and forced repatriation that detainees suffer, and the existence of the detention centre itself.
A demonstration will take place in Rome today - Saturday 9th May.
No more cages, no borders, no nations, no deportations.
Shut down the detention centres!
