Headingley Socialist Workers' Party | 05.05.2009 14:58 | Workers' Movements

'The Class Struggle in Britain Today' with Chris Harman, author of 'A People's History of the World'
7pm, Victoria Pub, Great George St.
Economic crisis can lead to outbursts of anger, but it can also lead to demoralisation. The present crisis hit Britain just as workers' organisisations were beginning to show new signs of resistance after the long hangover from the defeat of the miners 24 years ago. Chris Harman looks at the recent struggles to analyse the balance of class forces and the role of socialists today

talk talk and sell papers, the swp cannot do anymore than that. also, the swp is closely connected to the british state and is in no position to make any revolution.

If I was Harman, I wouldn't be boasting about writing 'a peoples history'. It is one of the most historically revisionist excuses for history I have ever read. The book, published in, and covering up until 1999 gives not one mention to the zapatistas, surely a huge part of peoples history. It misrepresents events leading up to the Spanish Civil War, and gives barley a mention to Durruti/the FAI et al. Infact, the book completley ignores any part of 'peoples history' that cannot be represented (or misrepresented as the case often is) as marxist. The complete lack of time or space given to working class anarchism/anti-authoritarianism over the years is complete political censorship,
Also, presenting Harman as 'the author of....' is misleading when the man is infact the comrade in chief of the SWP, and a hardened marxist fanaticist. This man is a crank - stay away!
