Housing Benefit Fraud in Nottingham

Andy | 28.04.2009 15:02 | Analysis | Social Struggles

Nottingham City Council claim to be 'closing in' on fraudsters and have shelled out on a prime site advertising campaign in the city to tell us so.

NCC are telling us via billboard adverts in the city that they are 'closing in on benefit fraudsters and back this up with press coverage that they've identified £300,000 of fraud this year.

However, this £300k only represents about 0.24% of the annual payout of benefits, which isn't really closing in on fraud at all.

So is all this expenditure on adverts (not to mention specialist fraud staff) justified or cost effective? Or will the result just be more fear and people being put off claiming what they ARE entitled to?
