the original was trolling

25.04.2009 12:41

As far as we (indymedia UK) can tell, the original was disinformation. We have not been able to confirm any information through our many contacts, so it appears to be bullshit. The email showing the originals were hidden can be read at  http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/mmid/imc-uk-moderation/2009-0424-8m

If we do find out it is true it will be posted here again.

could it be...

In light of the article in the Guardian about the police having moles... it might well have been media management misinformation.

links to hidden stories

25.04.2009 12:34

If you use an RSS reader to see Indymedia stories, you get the hidden ones too.

RSS is Really Simple Syndication, and it basically is a way of querying Indymedia every so often to get the links, titles and introductory paragraphs to the stories, and stores them on your computer. It is the orange link that says "XML" at the bottom of the main stories.
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)

This is the link to it:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/features.rss

The Firefox web browser has an RSS reader built-in, or you can get standalone ones.
Look fore a little orange square icon with a dot and some curves on it.

There are some comment here saying it isn't true, other saying it is.

More than trolling

25.04.2009 14:50

"If we do find out it is true it will be posted here again"

If you do found out it is false then please investigate report back here what it was. Planting a fake but believable article, with supporting comments, is more sinister than simple 'bullshit' trolling. It'd imply an attempt to discredit Indymedia.

Discrepancies in the post

25.04.2009 15:40

Yesterday the post claimed:

"The truly worrying part is that police have requested the mainstream media to not report this until later tonight as further arrests are expected and they do not want tip offs."

Bearing in mind that the attempt to recruit a Plane Stupid activist as an informer is top news today, it would be fair to expect that by now these arrests would be reported - they haven't been.

The story also claimed:

"Legal observers have visited Battersea and West End Central police stations to request oversight of the interviews but have been refused entry."

It is very unlikely that legal observers would do this.

There does not appear to be any truth in the claims - which is why the posts were hidden in the first place.

nice one

Seems to me the correct course of action IMCUK - keep up the good work and keep MI5 lies out of here (as much as possible) :)

For what reason would someone post this disinformation?

26.04.2009 20:24

It does sound like the story is a bit dubious, but it is really a conspiracy? What reason would the state or some other opponent have to post such a story? It seems a bit elaborate and unlikely to work if it is just to create paranoia, since it would quickly be exposed as untrue.

Assuming it is untrue, It seems more likely it is just a rumour that got out of hand, or someone smoking too much wacky baccy or with paranoid mental health issues.
