BNP activists assault anti-fascists in Liverpool city centre

BNP Thugs Take to the Streets of Liverpool and Assault Local Anti-Fascists

Yesterday, April 23rd, saw fifteen members of Liverpool BNP members take to the streets of our city again. As word got around that they were leafleting on Church Street, around 12.30pm, local anti-fascists did what they could to mobilise people (not the easiest thing to do mid-week, mid afternoon!). By 1pm there was around twenty anti-fascists leafleting in and around the BNP, making it loud and clear what the BNP stood for, and why people shouldn’t tolerate their presence. This was met by the standard bellowing of ‘get a wash’ and ‘get a job’ from the BNP only serving to further alienate members of the public, from whom they were already getting short shrift.

Before long it became clear that as well as their suited and booted ‘activists’, the BNP had a number of thugs dispersed in the crowd who were taking it in turns to try and intimidate both anti-fascists and uninvolved passers by. This was on top of their standard motley crew of camera men who were systematically patrolling the crowd and filming anybody who showed opposition to their presence.

At around 1.30pm the BNP realised that they were getting nowhere, packed up their stall and moved of towards St. Georges Hall, the site of recent BNP rallies in the city. By the time anti-fascist activists arrived they had set up their stall in St. Johns Garden to the rear of the hall, and once again began leafleting. Anti-fascists responded by striking up conversations with other people in the Gardens and handing out our leaflets. After five minutes the BNP decided they had been beaten once again and got together to leave the gardens. Two anti-fascists ran ahead to get out on to the road in front where they could continue ensuring that the public knew the truth about the fascist organisation.

At this point three of the BNP members, Peter Tierney, Steve Greenhalgh and an as yet unidentified man, decided that they’d had enough of being routed from their chosen leafleting spots, and unleashed a vicious assault on the two who had run in front. Peter Tierney, armed with a folded camera tripod, used his weapon to hit one man around the head, splitting it open. Steve Greenhalgh turned his paste table on its edge and began to use it as a weapon in much the same way that riot police were doing with their shields at the G20 protests, and the third man went in with fists and boots narrowly missing one activists face. On realising the seriousness of the assault Steve Greenhalgh (thought to be Liverpool BNP’s local organiser) then quickly began ushering his minions, some whom clearly hadn’t quenched their blood-thirst, out of the gardens. The group were followed closely by anti-fascists until they left the gardens, ensuring no repeat attack could take place.

In the aftermath of the attack three anti-fascists left the scene together, deliberately going in the opposite direction to the BNP. However, as they rounded a corner they saw the fascists talking to a group of police. Not wishing a further confrontation, the activists walked past, only for the police to run towards them and inform one of them that Peter Tierney (the perpetrator of the armed attack) had made a complaint of assault against him. Without any chance to defend himself, the activist, who was showing no sign of resistance, was cuffed and arrested on suspicion of assault. Police then took over half an hour to take seriously the report that it was in fact the BNP who had launched a vicious attack on anti-fascists. The falsely imprisoned anti-fascist then spent nine hours in custody in the same police station as Tierney, with police telling other comrades that he was in a different station. As a result when the man was released from custody , wearing only distinctive custody issue tracksuit clothing, he was followed by a car full of BNP activists who threatened ‘we know where you live, we’re going to fucking kill you’.

Despite the attack, the day was on the whole successful. Anti-fascists prevented the BNP from having free reign on the streets of Liverpool, seeing that the BNP’s vile politics did not go unchallenged. In the end the BNP were unable to control themselves and showed the public what they are really about: ‘defending rights for whites with well placed boots and fists’ in the words of their chairman Nick Griffin. Once again, Merseyside Police showed themselves to be entirely biased towards the BNP, not only responding to a false claim only made to deflect attention from the fascist attacks, but putting an activist in serious danger by holding him at the same station as Tierney and failing to ensure his safety upon being released.

This is the clearest example yet in Merseyside that the BNP are not simply an far-right racist party, but a fascist organisation who rely on violence when all the cards down. This story must be publicised to its full extent in the run up to the June 4th Euro-Elections in which Griffin is standing as candidate for the North-West. The activist who was injured is now recovering following hospital treatment, and the activist who was arrested has been bailed until July 21st and banned from the city centre. It is unforunate that anti-BNP activists were attacked on the street in this case. However it is well known that the BNP are a violent party despite their current clean cut attire and this should be taken into consideration while confronting them.
Next time be prepared for the stand-off to become hostile.
Better luck next time.

The BNP are thugs

24.04.2009 18:05

The Fascists in Liverpool are violently oposed to all forms of education. They have held a long term hatred of students. Maybe because students wish to better themselves. Or because students come from somewhere else. They are terrified of change.

The Fascists of Liverpool have a long history of violent asault and of pursuing vendetas against the inocent for no reason apart from not liking the look. Greenhalgh is involved in getting Griffin elected to Europe. The bottom line of that will be Griffin gets a pension scheme out of the bonedomes.

Good luck and thanks for standing up for decency and ordinary people. If the BNP get even one seat in Europe they will use that money to flood Liverpool with their viscious alien creed. Nobody wants them here - they should go back to nazi germanny where they belong.

Antifascism tactics aside...

24.04.2009 21:22

...I think the most important lesson to be drawn from this is that despite their claims to mainstream 'respectability', BNP members will use violence on a street level. This is hugely damaging to the image they are trying to project in the run-up to the European elections. Of course, mainstream politicians don't have to do use violence because they have cops and the armed forces to do that for them.

S orry, but it's not enough

I'm afraid that the tone of this piece smacks of the self-victmisation Searchlight and the UAF specialise in.

"The group were followed closely by anti-fascists until they left the gardens, ensuring no repeat attack could take place."

We know the BNP are a violent fascist organisation, they had assaulted two of your comrades, you had them outnumbered and there were no cops, and the best you could do is follow them?! Sorry, but that really isn't enough. Antifascists have to be prepared for physical confrontation when dealing with the BNP.

Kick Them Off The Streets

Here we go again. The BNP Lie Machine.

25.04.2009 08:11

The BNP have a policy of systematically lying and claiming to be victims. They are not victims. There is no conspiracy to keep the BNP out of power. There is revulsion at the sinister and alien creed the BNP preach. There is concern that the BNP finances have never been made public. There is overwhelming concern that the BNP hire thugs to stalk and intimidate. Democracy and the decent public keep the BNP out of power.

There are no paid thugs of the labour party stalking the BNP. There are people pushed beyond endurance by the petty criminals, thugs and liars in the BNP who confront them when they emerge from their vile lairs.

Everybody knows that when the BNP get elected the BNP do nothing. Everybody knows that having the BNP in your area results in an increase in petty crime. Everybody knows the relationship between BNP and Redwatch. Everybody knows the BNP hide their racism behind nice suits. Everybody knows the BNP hate Liverpool.

The BNP have promises not policies. The BNP nationalisation promise was described, by a former National Leader as a way to get nostalgic lefties to donate. The BNP is the party of betrayal not promising. The BNP is the party which regards anybody who loves Liverpool with contempt and hatred. At least, that would be what you might think if you heard the Red White and Blue Festival conversations.

The BNP hate Liverpool because the people here pull themselves up and succeed. The BNP need failures with bitter empty lives. Confronted with militant antifascists or with people who actually think, the BNP fall back on the one thing they are good at. Lies, lies, lies.

Why would anybody need to even think of making up stories about the BNP when there are so many factual events to point at? They are a vile and wicked party whose alien creed has no place in this civilised and cultured city.

Don't be fooled by Nazi's

25.04.2009 11:16

The Liverpool BNP are hard line Nazis, the events of the other day backfired on them when the fascists where handing out leaflets.

After recent bad press reports Gri££in had ordered them to look more presentable, suited & booted & with the main Nazi instigators hiding in the shadows the Liverpool BNP where trying to look more mainstream.

But as normal they showed themselves up for what they where, badly beating several people who where opposing them, some fascist youth mingled with the crowds but sprang into attack when ordered by mobile phone on orders from Gri££in himself or maybe Pete Molloy who is trying to look respectable these days, he was even ordered by Gri££in to hide his Nazi flag & Hitler picture he was displaying in his flat.

After Molloy under protest removed his Nazi mementoes he then made a youtube video with the theme "look folks, no swastikas here" as he went round his flat with a camera showing a swastika free environment, you can see this video on Pete Molloy's youtube channel, his username is "bluetoffeman".

Another back room Liverpool BNP member is Joe Owens who pops up regularly in the city centre bullying & threatening antifascist members & putting their pictures on redwatch, he recently wrote a book called "Street wars to door wars" which has a picture of Nick Gri££in on the front, the book was originally going be called the "Nazi Assassin" & was to have a swastika on the cover but he was persuaded by Molloy & Gri££in to give it a different name, Joe Owens hit the headliners several years ago when he was jailed for sending razor blades in the post to Jewish people in Liverpool, he was also alleged to be behind several gangland killings also but the case against him was dropped after the main witness against him disappeared, Owens could not himself be blamerd his lawyers said as he was in jail at the time.

Is this the same Pete Molloy?

25.04.2009 12:35

The Pete Molloy charged with 'Aggravated Trespass' in 2004? Whose "Heroic Exploits" can be read in "'SCALEY' A True Account of a Signalman in the British Army" - maybe the BNP are just frustrated writers. Whose Law studentship at Liverpool John Moores University does not appear to interfere with his Plumbing business. Joe Owens wrote this on V*N "Peter Molloy, of Liverpool bnp, is working for the security services. I informed Griffin about this after Molloy tried to sabotage the Everton v Stoke game, and have fans turn against the bnp. He was also responsible for putting a tri - colour emblem on Liverpool bnp flag. Given Liverpool’s sectarian past this was a very silly thing to do. The article below shows he’s a disruptive agent of the state. Griffin's inadequate security needs a good kick up the backside." And whose general reputation is as a disruptive influence and state plant?

Maybe thats just because he asked about the accounts. The BNP hate anybody asking about the accounts. Or, perhaps Joe Owens can spot a badun a mile off.

Not Pete Molloy

Video everything

26.04.2009 03:53

As the anti-Scientology anonymous protesters have learned, if you expect your target of protest to be violent or accuse you of crimes, video everything. Anyone going up against the BNP in this kind of action should be taping the lot. Never let anyone get isolated, never hit back.

Bob

Fight Back

26.04.2009 18:37

Never hit back?

If an antifascist is being attacked by the racist scum then it is the responsibility of all who went out with them to help defend them.

Self defence isn't a crime, and you don't need to be a militant antifa to fight back.

Don't fight back and the streets will soon be taken over by the racist scum, knowing that nobody will touch them.

or strike first?

Fighting is what the BNP want

26.04.2009 23:34

Just as street clashes with police are a distraction from confronting the policies of the state (and what the state wants), so are street clashes with the BNP a distraction from defeating them politically.

You are never going to be able to be physically present every time the BNP leaflet, and hitting them doesn't deter them. Give a fascist a broken nose, and you've got a fascist looking for revenge, and an anti-fascist looking at jail time. It was careless to get into the position where the BNP could manipulate the situation to injure an anti-fascist and get another arrested.

Relying on small groups of people to violently repress the BNP does nothing to engage the public, and is a massive risk to the personal safety of those involved. Confront them, expose them, picket them, leaflet against them - but brawling with them isn't going to help. And frankly I dislike the tinge of vigilantism this carries.

Bob

Get it in the papers

29.04.2009 11:30

How many people will read a thread like this ? A few dozen, maybe more ? Publications like the Post and the Echo and the local free press have a circulation of thousands, and they will all be campaigning in their own way to stop the BNP getting elected on June 4th. Please send any stories like this which reveal the true face of the BNP to the local media. The more people who write in, the more likely they are to publish.
