Skipper arrested by heartless co-op

mayflower | 18.04.2009 20:56 | Other Press | South Coast

Man arrested skipping at co-op in Selsey, nr. Chichester. in custody now.

Ben Nunn of Titnor Woods was arrested at 8pm for the 'theft' of 7 carrier bags full of discarded food. The food was destined to be shared with squatters in bristol on Sunday but is now sitting in police evidence bags. This is a warning to other skippers and a call out for solidarity in the form of actions. The co-op have decided to prosecute, please make your feelings known. Its mad that it has got to the stage of criminal convictions for those trying to feed ourselves and others with food on route to rot in landfill.

Antispe what eer happened to ...

Antispe it's stupid comments like yours that harms solidarity. No wonder everyone thinks WARN is full of grasses if can't even show a bit of solidarity to someone arrested for taking what has been discarded.

Solidarity

Troll

I suspect both comments are from "SHAC watch" type trolls. Of course everyone wants to show solidarity (whether AR or not) and no one in radical circles thinks WARN is full of grasses only.
"SHAC watch" and cops like to say they are.

coop have always been easiest to skip from in 10yrs of skipping

experience. I will forward this to local coop group in Nottingham. Instead of diving in skips, demand some money for planting trees at titmore, maybe youve tried??
It sounds really bad, the manager sounds like a bastard, have other skippers made a mess, this lets the side down where I usually go skipping. Good Locales I know there are getting pissed off at amount of rubbish & noise left by some dodgy skippers. Coop in Bristol sounds like its been taken over by bad people maybe, thats a shame, its time to reclaim the coop properly

So take action and support him by...

It's not easy to track down but the store it happened at is:

123 / 5 High Street,

Selsey,

West Sussex,

PO20 0QB Telephone: 01243 602110

(from Co-op website)

You can either phone/write to this store or Southern Co-operatives who probably made the decision:

Southern Co-operatives Limited
44, High Street
Fareham
Hampshire
PO16 7BN . Telephone: (01329) 223000. Fax: (01329) 223022
custservice@southerncoops.co.uk (try to write a proper letter (doesn't need to be long, mention any boycotting) or phone - they will take more notice)

Give them hell/politely enquire why they would press charges given that they are:

"a signatory of the Courtauld Commitment, which seeks to reduce packaging waste, and tackle the amount of *food* thrown away. By the end of 2010, we aim to be using 15% less packaging for our own-brand products."

And will deprive someone of their freedom for removing waste from their bins and yet:

"In 2007, we gave £10.4 million (or nearly 7% of our pre-tax profits) to the community"

....It's not enough to shake our heads on this one ladies and gents, we need to act to stop this isolated incident setting a Very dangerous precedent that might spread amongst all supermarkets and, indeed, all stores.

- By rescuing food, people are preventing waste, reducing carbon emissions required to transport it, saving landfill space and feeding other people too -

You've got the WHY and HOW now, so take action people - email, letter, phone.
