Visteon Workers: The Fight Goes On!

brum wobbly | 10.04.2009 19:45 | Workers' Movements | Birmingham

Visteon workers were given just 6 minutes notice last week when the company they work for went into receivership. Rather than just walk away, workers responded by occupying workplaces in Belfast, Enfield and Basildon. This forced a series of meetings with the bosses here and in New York. There will be another meeting on Tuesday where they will be discussing packages.

A High Court Judge gave the occupiers untill midday yesterday to leave the factory. Union officials also advised that they leave as part of the bargaining process, so workers decided to end their occupation. They stressed however that this was just the beginning and they are continuing their struggle with a 24 hr picket outside the plant. This is to prevent administrators removing machinery from the plant or if the rumours are true, that Visteon have setup a shadow company to take control of the plant and hire a new set of workers on lower wages.

As you can see from the footage, the workers are motivated and prepared to fight. They need as much support as possible now, so if you've got a caravan to loan, tents, gazebos, braziers then contact them or volunteer with your group for shifts at the 24 hr picket.

There's also a Solidarity Rally tomorrow, Saturday April 11th outside the Visteon Factory in Enfield and a mass leaflet distribution at 1 pm. For more details see:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2009/04/427182.html
