Police Medic rendering basic first aid

08.04.2009 17:15

I trust this was a genuine question. The Police Medic had inserted an airway as an aid to help the casuality's breathing. "Police Medics" I believe are trained to a standard a little higher than the 4 day standard "First aid at Work" that many people take at work. Their real use is in situations wherein Ambulance Services and unformed first aiders eg the St John would be deemed to be at too great a risk. Its probably fair to say that the help given as depicted in these two images as of a standard equal to one might expect of a St John ambulance volunteer at a football match, ie above basic but not by much. Evidence of further skiils and equipment ie a grip and support for the airway are lacking in these images. Police first aid training was reviewed following criticism in the Lawrence report so that all front line police are trained to a degree, probably closer to the one day Emergency Aid course. I tend to believe that the most important person in the chain of care is the first person to render aid, what is not yet know is how long a delay the casuality endured before such help was called and arrived. It is of course not yet know what help if any he received prior to the arrival of the police medic.

There were infact a number of volunteer action medics at the protest. Action medics all have at least "first aid at work" level training plus an additional weeknds training in protest first aid. Many action medics if not most are health care professionals using their specialist skills to support others. Alas at previous G8 events eg Edinburgh, action medics were themselves subject to undue police attention.

A Well wisher
