Excel protest update at 1.45pm

Diverse protests are happening at the Tidal Basin of Royal Victoria Dock by Excel Station. Police have blocked off all other areas. About 300 were there around 1pm. Locals have reported that protesters arriving at Canning Town have been sent back by police.

The protest is particularly international including several Ethiopians giving speeches against their government and in favour of a political prisoner and a couple of Congolese men raising the profile of the DRC genocide. Also some assorted socialist newspaper sellers and anarchists. No problem walking into or out of the site. The media have a big presence and there are about as many police as protestors at the site. Several police also surround the closed Custom House DLR station.

Police had advised shopkeepers on Freemasons Road to close up today, but by lunchtime several had reopened. Police had also told local people to not go out/only go out carrying 2 forms of ID, but this wasn't practical and isn't being enforced.
