Labour hold Headington Hill & Northway

Speedy | 28.03.2009 18:32 | Analysis | Oxford

Oxford Labour Party have pulled off an impressive victory in the Headington Hill & Northway by-election

Labour have held and increased their majority in one of Oxford's most marginal council wards. After the death of veteran councillor Maureen Christian, a by-election was called. Labour Party candidate Roy Darke successfully increased Labour's majority despite Labour's poor fortunes nationally and the expected loss of some of Maureen Christian's personal support.

It was a three-horse race between Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats with the Liberal Democrats already holding the ward's other seat and the Conservatives only being beaten by a 37 vote margin at last years' local elections.

The results of the by-election were as follows:-
Roy Darke (Lab) 548
Marc Borja (Con) 443
Ruth Beer (Lib) 378
Katherine Wedell (Green) 62

The victory can be put down to hard work reconnecting to the voters, particularly on the Northway estate. The Labour Party needs to reconnect for many reasons but this is an example of reconnecting with people and it paying the party back electorally. I can only hope the party learns this lesson nationally.

Or it could be because.......

Perhaps the win was because Oxford Labour are so good at persuading voters they are a local party and nothing to do with the Government.

The economy is in a mess because of New Labour's failures to regulate banking. The City Council has no money because the New Labour Government keeps on cutting the amount of our taxes it gives to the City, tells Councils they must get a high return on investments which leaves Oxford down £4.5 million to an Icelandic bank AND because Oxford Labour spend money on pet projects for short term gain.

If Mr Darke and his mates really cared about this City, they'd want to win on an honest vote, not some distorted spin on the truth and a pretence that the Labour Party hasn't become another version of the Tories!

They make politics bad for all of us - and are helping the Government to bring in a dictatorship by the back door (by putting off people from voting).

The honest voters of Oxford must not let them get away with their lies and half-truths in the County and Euro elections in June.

AND I wonder how many postal votes there were........
