Demonstration @ Yarl's Wood Saturday March 21st 2009

John O | 22.03.2009 07:13 | Migration | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Birmingham | World

Thousands of person seeking/refused asylum/overstayers/persons 'Sans Papiers' are currently being kept in immigration prisons (AKA Immigration Removal Centres) throughout the UK. They haven't committed a crime, but they can be imprisoned indefinitely. Many of the people detained have experienced torture, and their trauma is exacerbated by being detained. Seven of the IRCs are operated for profit by private companies.

36 people have been in immigration detention for more than two years, 72 more than 18 months, 128 more than one year.

Immigration laws criminalise foreign nationals
The effect of immigration laws is to potentially criminalise all foreign nationals. It does not matter if they have committed any criminal offence or not. The Immigration Act 1971; Immigration and Asylum Act 1999; Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002; UK Borders Act 2007 authorises detention even where there has been no offence, no charge, no prosecution, no court intervention

The road to detention centres like Yarls Wood often begind in an Immigration Reporting Centre like Communications House

DEMONSTRATE AGAINST BRITAIN ’S RACIST IMMIGRATION LAWS

Show solidarity with asylum seekers and immigrants

TUESDAY 7 April 1-2pm

Outside the UK Immigration Service Communications House
210 Old Street, London , EC1V 9BR
(nearest tube – Old Street )
SUPPORT THIS DEMONSTRATION IN SOLIDARITY WITH ASYLUM SEEKERS AND IMMIGRANTS
• To protest against mass deportations to northern Iraq, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and elsewhere
• To campaign against all immigration controls. Britain is a wealthy country and has built that wealth by robbing the poor of the world. It then turns on those who come from poor countries to seek asylum or a better life.
• To let the public know what Communications House is. The building looks anonymous but immigration reporting centres are places of fear for asylum seekers, who have to report to them monthly, weekly or even several times a week. Anyone who is detained will when reporting will be sent to a detention centre. Immigration Reporting Centres themselves are sufficiently prison-like to qualify for inspection by the Chief Inspector of Prisons (see  http://inspectorates.homeoffice.gov.uk/hmiprisons/inspect_reports/STHF-reports/2007-Communications_House_f1.pdf)
