U.K. to monitor, store all social-network traffic?

Crypto | 19.03.2009 18:23 | Repression | Technology

An article on CNET is reporting that: "The U.K. government is considering the mass surveillance and retention of all user communications on social-networking sites, including Facebook, MySpace, and Bebo."

Vernon Coaker is the U.K. Home Office security minister has said: "Government are looking at what we should do about the intercept modernisation programme because there are certain aspects of communications which are not covered by the directive... when we present intercept modernisation programme proposals... [this] may include requiring the retention of data on Facebook, bebo, MySpace and all other similar sites."

Just like the Nazi's

20.03.2009 16:04

There is a film made in 1946 the year after the Nazi's left Rome
Rome Open City is the title it shows how they caught one of the resistance and by looking through their photos of friends, they found others by matching the faces on their ID cards.

They worked on the principle that friends would invite other friends into the resistance as trust is already established.

Then there is also the scene where a German Officer is looking through some photos and says I can take a walk in Rome without leaving my desk just like Google's Street View as well as showing how they ran informants

Social networking, Google's Street View bad idea for activists

"They worked on the principle that friends would invite other friends into the resistance as trust is already established".

Yes, that is the same principle they use today but it is a false principle, like every fascist principle. When I do something risky that requires help I don't invite my family or friends for a more basic principle, you don't shit where you eat. I work with colleagues. Some people don't realise, and should realise, that it is beneficial to think of resistance as a career rather than a lifestyle. Put in your hours, get your reward, don't get too close to the staff.

You could equally say 'The camera: bad idea for activists'. The truth is there are many uses for Googles' Street View for activists. It is handy to have a photo of somewhere you are going to hit without having to visit it. That aids in planning and training. Unless you have a realistic plan to ban a new technology then you should adopt it rather than complain about it. Street View is under parliamentary attack in Japan, maybe it should be here, but I've never felt proud or ashamed of the places I've lived.
Have you seen 'The Lives of Others'? Before DNA analysis the Stasi would collect the sweat of citizens so that they could be hunted by dogs. What would be a rational response to that from an East German dissident? No sweat?

"Gaz"

Don't call yourself Gaz, if you are a film buff then call yourself Gary which is the first cinematic name to be invented. The very first Gary was Gary Cooper, whose agent chose it to evoke the "rough, tough" nature of her native Gary, Indiana. There weren't any Garys before Gary Cooper, except as a shortened version of Gareth. It is such a fucking weird name I don't know why you'd want to change it. Cooper starred in 'High Noon', which was an allegory for Macarthyism. Dimitri Zinovievich Tiomkin won an oscar for that excellent score.

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
On this, our weddin' day
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Wait, wait along

I do not know what fate awaits me
I only know I must be brave
And I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave

Oh, to be torn betweenst love and duty
Supposin' I lose my fair-haired beauty
Look at that big hand move along
Nearin' high noon

He made a vow while in state prison
Vowed it would be my life or his'n
I'm not afraid of death but oh
What will I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin', don't think of leavin'
Now that I need you by my side

Wait along, wait along
