Bank of England support for HLS

18.03.2009 09:18

It is well known [1] that in 2001 the Bank of England began to provide banking services to Huntingdon Life Sciences, as they were unable to find a commercial bank willing to hold their accounts. The Bank usually only provides services to the Government and to other banks. This foi request might therefore be better addressed to the Bank of England or Her Majesty's Treasury.

The Bank is, however trying to get out of the business of commercial banking. Even HM Revenue and Customs have been told to find a commercial bank willing to accept their receipts. This is why you can't pay your Income Tax by Faster Payments - the Bank is unwilling to join the scheme. This might make it more difficult in future for the Bank to act as banker of last resort to customers who are unpopular with the commercial banks.
