protest over four depts to be cut

between 600 to 1000 Liverpool university students took to the streets to support lecturers facing the axe, as bosses prepeare to disband four departments. last wednesday.
the subjects politics, communications, philosophy and statistics, were to be removed for not reaching the universities "exceptional standards".

apparently the universities senate meeting was unable to do the dirty, as an amendment to the the resolution for closure of 81 to 62, stating it should "scrap the deptmartments" to it "should move to close them"
provided a breathing space for protesters to galvanise support amonst other people.

"the university can rest assured that industriall action remains an option" said.UCLs(lecturers union)
.Dr fionnghuala sweeney .

echoing this fighting sentiment:
paul athans: SOS student spokesperson : commented.

"the fight would go go weve stopped the closure motion but today we may of won the battle but we have not won the war."

THEY SAY CUTBACK - WE SAY FIGHTBACK!

What a magnificent day! This is a great start. These cuts must be stopped. Staff should strike and students should occupy over this. Escalate the campaign now to win, no retreat! Also, action like this can rally the whole city and beyond into the kind of movement we need against job losses, cutbacks and capitalist recession.

Here below is cut n paste from Liverpool Daily Post. There are loads of good local news stories supportive of the Liverpool students and staff campaign ... local journalists across the UK also face the capitalist axe...

"MORE than 600 protesters turned out in force to oppose University of Liverpool plans to axe four of its key departments.

Their demonstrations co-incided with the meeting of the university’s Senate, which gathered to discuss plans to scrap its politics, communications, philosophy and statistics departments.

And the objectors’ calls have been echoed by council bosses, who fear homegrown students who cannot afford to study in other cities will be denied an education.

Present and past students, lecturers and union officials made angry protests against the university’s decision to put the departments in line for closure on the basis their research output did not meet the university’s “exceptional standards.”....more at.....
