Debt Pride

Hildy Johnson | 11.03.2009 13:14

I hereby propose to the house the idea of Debt Pride.

that's right. quite a few of us are in debt and its a shameful secret that many are desperate to hide.

but perhaps its time for us to come out of the closet as it were and declare that we are proud to be debtors, that we will no longer permit ourselves to be ashamed of our debts and the fact that it is unlikely that we will ever be able to pay them off

i see that there would seem to be a space in our calender for the G20 events week so perhaps Debt Pride could take place on one of the free days.

Good idea. I have a Student Loan that I have the intention of NEVER REPAYING. How? By leaving the country for good and at the same time, avoiding ID cards too. Oh, and HMP England.

Debt is Liquidity, War is Peace, Ignorance is Strength!!! Bring on the new world.

..but is pride the right word?
Debt is nothing to be ashamed of by any means, but "pride" is a bit strong.

I like this idea. I didn't get into debt through irresponsibility or excess consumption.

In fact when we're assaulted from all sides by exhortations to spend spend spend while being offered apparently free money, I am not going to condemn anyone in debt as "irresponsible".

Go talk to Fred Goodwin about "irresponsible" I used the means available to me to try and do what I thought was right. I lost and am now in debt. Shit happens, I should never have been placed in those circumstances in the first place.

Out and proud

passing responsibility

Some of these posters are passing their mistakes as others.

Property buyers. If the property prices went up and they made a load of money, I'm sure these same people would be the first to pat themselves on the back about their 'shrewd' financial business sense.

Instead, now that prices have dropped (which really was no "big secret" - there was years of warnings), these same people are blaming the government and banks, saying they should not have been 'forced' to borrow the money.

Borrowing lots of money on credit cards to buy consumer items that you don't actually need then and say it was too easy to borrow the money - it was forced on us, is the same thing. You are basically saying you are a Child who should be living in a nanny state. A big brother government should be in control to prevent you injuring youself because you cannot be responsible for your own actions. I personally agree with this, because it is clear that people really do not care about responsibility, so it should be taken away from them.

It all smacks of trying to have your cake and eat it. Then moaning when it doesn't go according to plan.

'and that if we didn’t succeed in that world it’s our own fault. I think it’s very difficult to say that when faced with a foreclosure crisis you support the banks but not the people who are being foreclosed upon. You can accuse the people being foreclosed upon of irresponsibility, and in the US there is a strong racist element in this argument. When the first wave of foreclosures hit places like Cleveland and Ohio they were devastating to the black communities there but some peoples’ response was ‘well what do you expect, black people are irresponsible. We are seeing right-wing explanations of the crisis which explain it in terms of personal greed, both in Wall Street and those who borrowed money to buy houses. So they attempt to blame the crisis on the victims. One of our tasks must be to say ‘no, you absolutely cannot do that’ and to try and create a consolidated explanation of this crisis as a class event in which a certain structure of exploitation broke down and is about to be displaced by an even deeper structure of exploitation. It’s very important this alternative explanation of the crisis is discussed and conveyed publicly.' David Harvey  http://www.counterpunch.org/harvey03132009.html

Come bring your Debt Pride event to April 1st, Carnival, Party & Picnic in the City!

Can we change society and make it all about humanity not insecurity and greed? Yes we can!
