I post this in solidarity with the good work of the people of Camden in the Stop Camden Animal Lab campaign. However I want to make it clear that this is not posted as part of, or by any member of that group.

The community in Camden need community facilities, council homes etc.

These postings show just how ill thought out this lab idea is. We are begging the government to rethink this lab idea through and to build something more appropriate for the community.

This week an article in the Camden Gazette about the lab and my concerns and quotes on this are mentioned.

While each are entitled to there own opinions there is a dangerous theory spreading through AR that the "the world is being taken over by aliens and 12 foot lizards". Members of the public on anti fur demos have been accused of being aliens. While I did not witness this myself I do condemn whoever is encouraging people to believe these things and the theory "that it is OK to attack people because they are aliens disguised as humans". I condemn this. These people accuse anyone who speaks out against them of being "fantasists" or "living in a fantasy world". I should point out that the majority of animal rights activists do not believe in the "aliens" theory but the spread of this is very worrying.

I am against animal testing like a lot of people including Sainsburys and I believe that there should be research into alternatives. I support the work of people such as Safer Medicines Campaign - www.curedisease.net and peaceful groups such as Animal Aid, Uncaged etc.
I think that the sensible way for the campaigns to go ahead is to educate people about science in an unbiased way.
A number of people in the community do not agree with animal testing. Others are not against animal testing but want alternatives to the lab that are better for the community. These same people do not want to join an extreme group and we do have to get to know people and set ground rules on things before we can have large meetings, demos or fundraisers involving numbers of people from the community including young people.

I agree that people have to respect each other and that it is for the best that some of the more radical groups stick to their own thing and that the community campaign remains exactly that....an inclusive one that believes that people have a right to a say safely.

We spoke to builders

10.03.2009 18:53

A builder has said they "don't know much about the project itself and that they will not be getting involved with the main project".

He also said that they were "looking to see if there's any old buildings underneath the site, that sort of thing, we're just drilling holes to see what's under there".

There are two seperate [not connected to lab] building sites adjacent to this site at Brill Place.

If in any way, shape or form they are getting the site ready for the lab they are still protest targets, if not they are not. The builders answers seems a little ambiguous to me.

Just reporting what they said....and what's going here in Camden.

12.03.2009 15:58

We are reporting what's going on in much the same way as the local newspaper is....we do not want the lab here, however we are campaigning in a way that doesn't see people as "targets". We have a right to a say and to protest in the same way that the local paper, The Camden New journal has, but we do not see the builders as "targets" any more than the newspaper does.
As protesters, i.e. people who are speaking out, dissenting when they do not agree with something, we are PROTESTERS, that is not the same thing as seeing someone as a "target".

I think it is about time that people saw the difference between protest and what is becoming known as "terror" or targeting people.

People have a right to join a protest campaign without being drawn into something that sees people as "targets". The community in Camden IS speaking out on this but we are not "targeting" anybody.

The Camden newspapers are no longer printing the many, many letters form protesters that they are being sent to them regarding this.

A number of people want to campaign and want to protest but do not want to join something that is going to get them into trouble. We understand that people do not want this lab, on safety grounds. The same people also do not want to get involved in a campaign that puts people's safety at risk.

We should point out that MI5 have voiced concerns over this lab and that they have leaked security fears to the Evening Standard. If you want to voice your concerns about this lab the you can sign the online government petition at

I'm sure that if the builders are saying that they don't know much about the project it is because hardly anyone does as there has been a complete lack of communication between the consortium behind the lab and the public.

We think that the public has a right to a proper meeting on this which has been called for by Camden Councillors several times but has not yet happened.

Firstly I would like to make clear I’m not encouraging illegal activity. But let’s get something straight, I’m not part of your campaign and while I respect the choice of your campaign to engage in the way you choose, you must respect mine. Run your campaign as you like, your doing a good job and I respect you for it. But others will want to campaign against the lab including animal rights activists and we have our way of working. You don’t have a monopoly on who can be against the lab or how they should act.

ACT (in whatever way you feel is appropriate) NOW!

Animal Defenders are welcome to join our campaign.

17.03.2009 13:26

People who are against animal testing are welcome to join our campaign. Many people are worried about joining an "extreme" group and do not want to become involved with anyone advocating or refusing to condemn terror tactics such as sending parcel bombs.

We have contacted the Provost UCL so that they can take steps so that any students who want to campaign can do so safely.
We are taking steps with community leaders so that local people can campaign safely.

We have actively taken measures to make sure that people in this campaign cease contact with anyone who advocates terror or refuses to condemn it.

This does not mean that we do not want animal rights activists in our campaign as the majority of people who want to protest or speak out want to do so peacefully.

If this means that we end up with "no support" then so be it, however we are standing firm on this one as people studying, living and working in Camden have a right to campaign and have a right to do so safely.

Hi, Mandy

18.03.2009 10:24

Don’t misunderstand my, I’m supportive of you campaign and your group. I’m just making it clear that I’m not a member and am not controlled by any rules that you may have about how your group operates.

You must understand that if this project goes ahead it is likely that some more ‘extreme’ actions will be taken by some people. What you say about them is up to you, I’m personally not going to go around condemning people (however, I will say I personally disagree with bombing) that is up to me.

A whole range of groups and individuals will be fighting the lab and while it’s OK to keeping our distance from each other I hope you decide not to divide us by condemning other group’s actions. Once again I would like to express my respect for you and your campaign, I wish good luck.

Oh come on, that makes no sense at all, I have no idea who said this to you but this isn’t anything to do with AR. It’s so stupid I don’t even feel like addressing it, but if people are lizards then they are non-human animals and have rights in any case.

Mandy, I’d ask that you speak to people directly about this instead of posting this on Indymedia, it doesn’t help anyone. How would you like it if I posted things about any strange views anyone in your group might have? There are ‘crazies’ in every group; it should be addressed quietly.

The add was posted in real time after the postings but was added by Indy BEFORE

06.04.2009 00:55

This does make the addition look a little odd as the comment was made in regards to the "bomb comments" and was added in real time AFTER these comments but was posted by Indy is if beforhand which makes it read a bit oddly but that's OK.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the meeting.
