1rst of April Protests: Who I don't Want to be Associated With

Ida B. Wells | 07.03.2009 16:17 | Repression

The article below appeared on The Daily Telegraph ('A giant bonus for foes of capitalism', Friday 27 February 09). I wasn’t too worried about the text itself. What got my attention was the picture that illustrated it.

I mean, what is that about? Did those people go around the city threatening to lynch the bankers? Is that supposed to be funny? Witty? I personally don’t think it is any of it. It is a bit sinister to say the least. Also, it just shows a serious lack of imagination and, more importantly, some authoritarian tendencies. I’ll come out on the 1rst of April to voice my dissent to what is going on in the city and join others against the G20 meeting. Yes, I’m all up for blocking roads, occupying buildings, sitting down and overall, resist any attempt by the police to stop my protest. However, I think I’ll keep clear from those in that image. To me they just look like a bunch of fascists (the hanging rope? the black-hooded hangman? Is that the KKK?) I even wondered: are they working for the police? Because, lets be honest, if you represent yourself that way, aren’t you making it easier for the police to justify their violence and linking us and our tactics to fascist groups such as Combat 18 (read again the now famous Guardian article ‘A Summer of Rage’)? The Daily Telegraph loved that photograph and that’s why they published it. Because that’s how the conservative press normally represent activists from the radical left: as bloodthirsty maniacs. But, I do consider myself to be a radical and I would never even think of going round telling others I might lynch them. That image is not only disturbing. It is stupid. Of course, you do whatever you want but I don’t think you’re doing anyone any favors, unless it is the Police, the government and the bankers the ones you’re trying to help out here.
