NEW REGIONAL BRANCH SET UP

Greyhound Action's branches in Manchester and Cheshire have merged to form a new regional branch, called Greyhound Action North-West, in order to more effectively campaign against the greyhound racing industry in the area.

The main focus of the campaign is to bring about the closure of the greyhound track at Manchester's Belle Vue Stadium, but it will also be working to end dog racing at the region's two flapping tracks, at Ellesmere Port and Westhoughton (Bolton), as well as to educate members of the public in the area not to attend or bet on greyhound racing, wherever that might take place.

Greyhound Action North-West (GANW) can be contacted at  greyhoundactionnorthwest@hotmail.co.uk or on 07952 238592.

MORE HELP NEEDED WITH BELLE VUE CAMPAIGN

Greyhound Action North-West are appealing for more help and support for their campaign to end greyhound racing at Belle Vue Stadium.

The group hold demos/leafletting sessions outside the stadium every Saturday evening, and sometimes on week-nights too, but urgently need more volunteers to help keep these going.

So, if you live in or near the Manchester area and can get along to help outside Belle Vue, even if only occasionally, please contact GANW (details above).

NORTHWICH STREET COLLECTION, SATURDAY MAY 9TH

Greyhound Action North-West will be holding a street collection and public education day in Northwich on Saturday May 9th from 11am till 4pm, and are appealing for both human and canine volunteers to help them shake tins and run their information stall.

They would particularly like people to bring their rescued greyhounds along to the event, to help attract public attention, so as to educate more people about the plight of dogs disposed of by the racing industry.

So if you live in or near the Cheshire area and can get along to help at Northwich on May 9th, with or without a rescued greyhound, the folks from GANW will be very pleased to see you.

The information stall will be in the main square in Northwich town centre and the
collection will take place in the pedestrianised area, where the High Street meets with Witton Street (near to Woolworths).

Please contact GANW if you can help.

NO MORE CARAVAN TRIPS TO THE DOGS!

In December we issued an appeal for supporters to contact the Northern Regional branch of Caravan - the charity for grocery people - after learning that they had planned a fundraising Greyhound Night at Belle Vue Stadium.

When we discovered that this was a yearly event, we wrote to all the major participants in Caravan, asking them to spare a thought for the plight of greyhounds and not to organise any more trips to the dogs.

We have now received a letter from Caravan's Director General, Gillian M Barker, in which she states that "following earlier communication with your organisation we no longer have a Greyhound Event as part of our fund raising calendar".
