Uchana (Haryana), Mar 1 (PTI) Seeking to reach out to the farmers ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, Congress President Sonia Gandhi today asserted that the UPA regime accorded top priority to their welfare and said the massive loan waiver scheme gave much needed relief to the farming community.
With the general elections just months away, the Congress president took the UPA's flagship programme National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and various programmes being implemented in the fields of education, health and agriculture to the people.

"Implementation of NREGA scheme, loan waiver for farmers and various other schemes have received the accolades of the people. The Rs 70,000 crore loan waiver scheme for farmers gave much needed relief to the farming community," she said addressing a well-attended rally in this Haryana town.

She said the UPA regime gave remunerative prices for peasantry for their produces and noted that the Government has implemented a number of welfare measures to improve the economic condition of labourers, dalits and people belonging to other backward classes.

The Congress chief said Indian economy continues to remain strong despite the recent global economic slowdown and attributed it to the policies followed by former Prime Ministers Jawahar Lal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. PTI
