Free Innocent Farmer - Prosecute Palm Oil Company!

Deepak Rughani | 17.02.2009 08:12 | Ecology | Globalisation | Workers' Movements

On Friday 13th February a letter signed by over 9500 concerned citizens was handed to the Indonesian Embassy. The letter called for the immediate release of farmer and Mayor, Muhammed Rusdi, and for the prosecution of biofuel company KDA, subsidiary of Sinar Mas who violently evicted farmers in Jambi Province of Sumatra.

The notorious company Sinar Mas is believed to be behind Rusdi's arrest. Sinar Mas is one of the biggest palm oil and pulp and paper companies in South-east Asia and is also understood to be behind the fire-bombing of a village in Riau, Sumatra last December.

Rusdi and other farmers from the village Karang Mendapo demand the return of their land which Sinar Mas illegally appropriated, logged and turned into an oil palm plantation years ago. Villagers have been threatened and persecuted.
