Cleaners come together in the city to protest sackings

Cleaners for Justice | 12.02.2009 23:50

The five cleaners unfairly dismissed by the cleaning company Mitie demonstrated today outside Willis insurance broker, where they had been working, in the heart of the square mile. They were supported by cleaners from other banks in the city, including Schroders. Twenty people chanted, whistled and made lots of noise in an autonomous demonstration organised with only a day's notice.

This comes after negotiations broke down over the reinstatement of the cleaners, who were made redundant on the spurious grounds that they could not alter their shift hours exactly as Mitie cleaning company demanded.

This dispute started a few months ago when Mitie, without consulting the workers as it ought to have done, established new contracts with Willis Group forcing workers to work full time at night. A situation which the cleaners could not accept.

More demonstrations are planned next week.
