It will feature local campaign groups talking about different areas of civil liberties, combined with live video feeds of high-profile speeches and debates from the likes of Shami Chakrabati and David Davis MP.

The Manchester Convention is being organised by Dave Page of Manchester NO2ID, with support from Students Against ID and Unlock Democracy. The Convention is a call to all concerned with the threats to our fundamental rights and freedoms – from our own State, from terrorism and the responses to terrorism and from the gathering financial crisis.

Dave Page said, "Civil liberties keep us safe, not just from the threat of authoritarianism but also from well-meaning bureaucrats and those who would enslave us with mindless conformity. This Convention will bring together local people from across the political spectrum who are aware of the ongoing and increasing threats to our freedoms. We will not only discuss, but also organise and propose action which everybody can take to defend their civil liberties."

Ask Shami

how she gets on TV all the time when she represents nobody but a tiny membership of around 8,000 members of Liberty.

She might not know herself.

Somebody knows though.

Shami, as a lover of liberty, should ask herself why the nation should be subjected to so much of her opinions when we've not asked for them and have no effective control over who the state broadcaster chooses to give airtime to.

Pete, it's the constant need for journalistic 'balance' - though anyway, she represents more people and a more important view than many who appear on TV, as you realise because you're just trying to stir up shit. Crawl back into your Daily Mail please.

Dave, it's bizarre needing the personal ego credit of organised by you personally. It's not the best way to get anyone else to help organise it, eh, and if there are other people, it's not the best way for them to feel valued.

Sigh, the things you read here....

Credit Where It's Due

Hi fool,

I'm certainly not intending to claim "personal ego credit". The press release clearly states that the organisation is being handled with Students Against ID and Unlock Democracy.

I am however the contact person for the Manchester event, handling enquiries from the public and the media, which is why the press release has my contact details.

I hope this clarifies things, and I hope to see you at the Convention!

Dave

bleedin' naysayers

Why is it when people try to do something positive so many people on this site see fit to criticize them? Should we thank Dave for giving up his time to organize this event rather than trying to paint him as some kind of egomaniac?
