Environmental Direct Action in Britain - a Short History, 17th Feb

Brian Doherty (Course Director: MA in Human Rights, Globalisation and Justice - Keele University) will give a short history of environmental direct action in Britain from the 1990s covering such campaign landmarks as:

Twyford Down, Newbury and the anti-roads movement,

Reclaim the Streets,

Manchester Airport 2nd runway battle,

GM crops,

Mayday protests,

Gleneagles 2005,

The Climate Camps.

The aim of the talk would be to give us an idea of our recent history - its successes and shortcomings.

After that, the discussion would move onto the the current strategical positions/topics/options facing the Climate movement - especially Kingsnorth and aviation.

In association with People and Planet, Campaigns Collective UMSU, Stop Expansion at Manchester Airport, Manchester Climate Action and Manchester Plane Stupid.
