ASA will not 'intervene' to stop the RKCR / Y&R ad campaign despite stating that 'Council sympathized with the concern that the ad may invite unwanted attention to female staff’. RKCR / Y&R have contracts with the UK Home Office for their anti Prostitution, Domestic Violence, Child Protection on the Internet and Anti Rape campaigns as well for the BBC, M&S and Oxfam!
In a letter of response to a complaint filed against the Virgin Atlantic ‘still red hot’ ad campaign created by advertising giant RKCR / Y&R, the ASA stated that while the ad presented ‘an exaggerated stereotypical view of the 1980’s’ and that ‘some viewers may find the representation of women in the ad distasteful’, it was deemed in acceptable taste that RKCR / Y&R ‘played on perceived attitudes of that time in a humorous way’. Stating that although the ASA ‘Council sympathized with the concern that the ad may invite unwanted attention to female staff’ the ASA found that ‘the ad was unlikely to be seen as sexist or derogatory towards women’. Incredibly; RKCR / Y&R have contracts with the UK Home Office for their anti Prostitution, Domestic Violence, Child Protection on the Internet and Anti Rape campaigns as well for the BBC, M&S and Oxfam! Perhaps it is a matter of time before RKCR / Y&R receive a contract for an anti sexual harassment in the work place campaign. Although judging by the Virgin Atlantic managerial response to staff airing their grievances through public forums in the past, one wonders if the Virgin stewards would ever dare to complain if the ‘still red hot’ ad does ‘invite unwanted attention to female staff’.
