Leeds Uni Occupied!

Sedition | 22.01.2009 18:24 | University Occupations for Gaza | Free Spaces | Palestine | Social Struggles | World

Leeds University has been occupied!

At 4.30pm today around 30 people occupied the Botany House building (near the Student Union) at Leeds University in protest against the attacks on Gaza.

Our initial demands are:

University

Open the books to show which companies that back the Israeli state the Uni is investing in and/or receiving funding from.
Disinvestment from said companies
To Release a statement condemning the Israeli state's attacks and blockade on Gaza
Surplus resources (computers, books etc) to be sent to students in Gaza
Scholarships for at least five Gazan students to study in Leeds
No repercussion, legal or otherwise for activists

Political

We call on the government to condemn the Israeli state's attacks and blockade on Gaza
To expel the Israeli ambassador from the UK
For Israeli diplomats to lose their diplomatic status and be tried for their part in the attaks
Demand the government does not send any military support to assist in the blockade or attacks on Gaza

We stand in full solidarity with the Gazan people and protestors around the world, including the occupiers at other universities.

We call on students from the university and the met, school and college students and members of the public from across Leeds to join us in the occupied space!

Don't forget to water the plants.

Read this on the Morning Star website earlier. Hope Leeds have similar success, don't forget to water the plants in the Botany building.

'London School of Economics (LSE) students ended their seven-day occupation of a lecture theatre with a declaration of victory on Thursday after winning all of their demands.

LSE director Howard Davies will now make a public statement about the Israeli bombing of academic institutions, organisers revealed.

The LSE has also agreed to provide scholarships for students who have been affected by the Israeli occupation and to facilitate a charity collection for Medical Aid for Palestine'.

The financial clout of corporate businesses like Leeds University could easily provide some substantial donations to Gaza along with scholarships. The real success would be for them to stop takin cash from dodgy corporations. Does anyone know if Leeds Uni is implicated in any dodgy sponsorship or funding links? It is not clear from the occupier's demands.
