On the day of the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the USA, the London Guantánamo Campaign invites you to join us at a demonstration to call for an end to the practice of "extraordinary rendition" - the kidnapping and transfer of individuals to countries where they are held indefinitely without charge or trial, incommunicado, often in solitary confinement and under appalling conditions, and interrogated, abused and tortured by or at the behest of the American CIA (Criminals In Action).
President-elect Obama has repeatedly stated that he intends to close Guantánamo (eventually), but this is merely the tip of the iceberg: lurking beneath the surface there exists an international spider's web of secret jails, throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and elsewhere; and the complicity of governments worldwide who turn a blind eye and consent to the use of their airspace, airports, prisons, interrogators and torturers. The CIA itself admits that up to forty thousand of these "ghost prisoners" have disappeared into their network (often never to resurface). The true figure is likely to be higher still.
This demonstration is being staged in solidarity with Witness Against Torture, an American NGO who are starting a 100-day action in Washington D.C. calling on the U.S. government to close Guantánamo Bay and other illegal jails, for an end to torture, no immunity from prosecution for torturers and their bosses, and justice for the tens of thousands of victims of these heinous practices http://www.100dayscampaign.org/
Organised by the London Guantánamo Campaign
