More Riots in Oslo / Mass arrests in Copenhagen

MR | 13.01.2009 21:25 | Palestine | Repression | Social Struggles | World

Yesterday there were new, and bigger, riots in Oslo. It all started
with a demonstration outside parliament, called by a variety of mainly
left wing organizations.

The demo was supposed to continue to the
Israeli embassy, 20 minutes away, but the main organizers cancelled
these plans after the riots earlier this week. That didn't prevent the
large majority of the crowd to proceed towards the embassy, where
after half an hour's siege, the riot cops started firing tear gas
grenades into the crowd, which to a large extent consisted of young
teenagers and ten to twelve year old kids. After trying to surround
the most militant part of the demo with newly designed riot vans
without succeeding (people just climbed the cars), the crowd
dispersed, and rioted throughout the city. All the McDonalds shops in
the inner city were smashed, and the Free Mason's headquarter was
attacked with firebombs and fireworks. More than 130 people were
arrested. The cops also arrested an activist from the autonomous scene
pre-emptively, on his way to the first demo - not the first time, and
most certainly not the last.

Last night also saw 75 arrests in Copenhagen, following street clashes
in connection with an pro-Israeli demo.

No time for analysis now, but the main left wing daily yesterday had a
two page interview with all the leaders of the left wing parties'
youth organizations, warning against the development. The front page
had political scientists warning about the Paris and Athens syndrome.
