LLoyds TSB Trample UK Registered Palestinian Charity

Innocent Dave | 10.01.2009 14:06 | Palestine | Repression

Interpal, a UK registered charity, faces closure as a direct result of action taken by Lloyds TSB. This action has been taken and no reason given.

Interpal is a non-political, non-profit British charity that works with international funding partners and partners on the ground to provide relief and developmental aid to Palestinians in need, primarily in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and the refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan.

On several occasions, mainly from the US, accusations have been made that Interpal has links to terrorism. These allegations have been thoroughly investigated by the UK Charity Commission, who found no evidence to support them and reported that Interpal is a "well run and committed organisation which carries out important work in a part of the world where there is great hardship and suffering."

On Nov 12 2008, Interpal received notification from their bank, the Islamic Bank of Britain (IBB), that LLoyds TSB, their clearing bank, has served notice on IBB to cease all dealings with Interpal. Clearing banks are responsible for the processing of all financial transactions and LLoyds TSB is one of the 4 UK clearing banks, which all high street banks must work through. The notice came into effect on 8 Dec 2008, but has been subsequently revised to 30 Jan 2009, and has the potential to force Interpal to cease operations early next month.

Stand up for justice - contact LLoyds TSB and demand they reverse this outrageous decision.

Alternatively, visit your local branch and demand that your concerns be passed along that way - this is likely to have far more impact!

Interpal support Hamas institutions that's why

11.01.2009 07:52

If you want to help Gaza you can donate to current appeals by UNRWA, Save the Children, Oxfam etc.

Interpal, whose president is the notorious Yusuf al-Qaradawi, have been exposed for helping build support for Hamas. BBC Panorama confronted the Charity Commission over this.  http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/panorama/5234586.stm.

Hamas have many times opened fire on the aid crossing point causing it to be closed, also confiscated lorryloads of Red Crescent aid last year. Then they can claim credit for what they can smuggle in through Rafah under the marquees erected during the 'ceasefire'.

Al-Qaradawi calls for gays to be stoned or burned and insubmissive wives to be slapped.

What was wrong with the previous comment, don't IMC readers have a right to know? No wonder IMC-London seceded.

Well I suppose

you would rather IMC readers wasted their time writing to Lloyds-TSB, who no doubt will write back to say what I've just said.

When those readers could have saved themselves that time and done something more worthwhile instead.

Makes no difference to me.

Concerned - start by providing evidence that al-Qaradawi is the president of Interpal. He isn't.

US OFAC 'global terrorist' witch hunt

13.01.2009 00:02

Actions against legitimate charities such as Interpal are due to the 'global terrorist' list maintained by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which in the manner of a sinister witch hunt, labels legitimate organisations such as Interpal as 'Specially Designated Global Terrorist' entities, using 'classified evidence' as a basis for its decisions, with no time-limit to the designation and no appeals process for being cleared from the list. Naturally, British businesses are afraid to do business with any organisation officially branded 'terrorist' by the US government, no matter that the organisation is entirely legitimate under UK law and not a shred of credible evidence has been provided linking the organisation to 'terrorist' activities.
