No new Coal in Leeds

Yanc | 08.01.2009 19:06 | Climate Chaos | Sheffield

Join the maarch against opencast mining in Leeds on Saturday.

NO COAL HOLE

It’s time to say NO!

We don’t want a dirty opencast coal site adding to climate change

Join us on Saturday 10th January 2009 to march around the proposed open cast coal mine site at Newton Lane. Meet at the White Horse in Ledston at 11:30 for a 12:30 start. We will take a route on public rights of way around and through proposed open cast site. The walk should take no more than an hour.

This protest event will be a joint venture between YANC and RAGE (Residents Against Greenbelt Exploitation).

For a map of the area including location of Ledston, see the RAGE website at: www.savefairburnings.org.uk or  http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2448926

White Horse pub postcode is WF10 2AB.

We will have some banners and placards but please feel free to make and bring your own.

If we are to tackle climate change, coal must be left in the ground. We need clean, green renewable technology, energy efficiency and decentralised energy.

Your New Years Resolution? To stop climate change!

The best way to get there is on your bike. Meet at 9:30 outside the Common Place to join up with other cyclists.
Or get the 10:41 train from Leeds to Micklefield then take a number 175 bus to Ledston.
Please try not to bring a car, but if you absolutely must, you can park at the pub.

What if the miners had won in 84/85?

What if the miners' strike in 1984/85 had been a success and the pits had been kept open?

Honest answered required please.

all depends on the existence of swappies. if the SWP had their way we'd be all selling papers,
if shit went right, the minors would strive for better conditions, better conditions moving them away from the dangers of underground mining and most probably towards green technology. minors were not minors because they enjoyed it. it was just readily available grafting work. most minors would have loved safer jobs.

UK Peak Coal: Long Gone

UK Coal Production
UK Coal Production

UK coal production peaked a long time ago -- even if the miners had won, and I wish they had, it wouldn't have altered the geology of the UK or the urgent necessity to get off fossil fuels as fast as possible.

Global peak coal might not be far off, the attached image was found via this article:
