During August 2008, to mark the anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima, Sylvia Boyes cut the fence at Fylingdales Radar station near Whitby. Today (18th December) Sylvia (aged 65), a dedicated peace campaigner, was sentenced for 12 weeks by Bingley Magistrates Court for her action at Fylingdales. Her protest was against Fylingdales role as an early warning radar station, part of US Missile Defense.
US Missile Defense is likely to start a new nuclear arms race between the US and Russia, as witnessed by recent developments including the US developing bases in Poland and the Czech Republic and Russia threatening to place missiles in Kaliningrad in response.
Sylvia's action also highlighted the destructive and devastating capacity of nuclear weapons; over 140,000 were killed in Hiroshima alone in 1945. Despite this, the UK and other countries continue to hold on to these weapons of mass destruction. The UK has 160 nuclear warheads. Each individual warhead is eight times as powerful as those used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Hannah Tweddell, Yorkshire CND Development Worker, said "Sylvia was standing up against illegal and immoral weapons of mass destruction. It is not Sylvia who should be in prison over Christmas but those who ensure that these weapons of mass destruction are deployed 24 hours a day. We welcome the recent launch of the Global Zero campaign supported by a diverse group of people from Margret Beckett to Henry Kissinger and believe that we can drastically reduce the number of nuclear war-heads, working towards an end to nuclear weapons".

Henry Kissinger—the man who rivals Pol Pot for the dubious honor of being the person responsible for the death of the largest number of innocent people in South East Asia (and far surpasses Pol Pot in criminality when one factors in Kissinger's various levels of responsibility for wholesale slaughter and repression in other parts of the world)—still wields significant power in the United States; but his role as eager facilitator of mass murder, totalitarian repression and other atrocities is never discussed in polite society.
Masterminded the murder of as estimated 600,000 peasants in Cambodia (the "Secret bombing")

Here is the message that was sent:
"Hi, I'm a volunteer from Leeds-Bradford Indymedia. Someone, allegedly from Yorks CND, has posted in our newswire here. I'm writing to enquire whether this is really a posting from Yorks CND and whether the quotation is accurate, as it seems quite bizarre that anyone from CND should cite an endorsement from two right-wing militarists (Kissinger and Beckett). If it is true, you're welcome to explain this by leaving a comment. If not, we can remove the posting."
