Film Showing in Bradford Monday 22nd December - Rubber Jungle

Bewildered | 15.12.2008 18:33 | Ecology | Repression | Workers' Movements | Sheffield

Rubber Jungle (70 mins 8.00 start) - the story of Chico Mendes and the rubber tappers of Brazil - When a big budget Warner Brother's movie project about slain Brazilian activist Chico Mendes goes bust, Bill Day, Terry Schwartz and Caito Martins head deep into the Amazon to find out who Chico Mendes really was and why Hollywood couldn't make a big budget film about him.

It's Monday night, there's nowt to do. It's 20 years since Francisco Alves Mendes - know to all as Chico - was gunned down.

No one* we spoke to knew anything about Mendes so we tracked down this download and present it for you in a spirit of remembrance and self-education.

(*Admittedly a small sample of mainly young people).

We also have, in the celebrated 1in12 library, the book "The Burning Season" which putatively formed the basis of the biopic which eventually got made. It's a worthwhile read, for those willing to join the library.

Films at the 1in12 club are presented on a proper screen with a decent sound system and comfy chairs for the first eight or nine people. Wooden foldies for the late arrivals. Dress up warm though.

Free.

Coffee and popcorn a possibility.
