Menezes Whitewash

After over a week the jury have returned their verdict in the inquiry into the police murder of Jean Charles de Menezes.
You may already know that when the coroner was finishing off the 11 week inquiry last week, he told the jury that they were not allowed to return an 'unlawful killing' verdict - and that it had to be a 'lawful killing' or an 'open verdict'.
The jury took a long time to come to their hobbled decision - probably because the evidence pointed unerringly at a botched police operation and an unlawful and preventable killing - and they didn't want to contribute to the whitewash.
Today they finally returned an open verdict - the only option available that didn't allow the police off scot-free. A total sham, and the family and campaign will now try to appeal this fraught and laughable decision.
Here's a half decent article about it (although I wouldn't wipe my bum with the Times)
