Pandemic & Safety fears for superlab and a word about Bird Flu

London Against Camden Danger Lab - Mandy Ford | 09.12.2008 20:53 | Animal Liberation | Bio-technology | Social Struggles | South Coast | World

We are London residents fighting against the proposed "Superlab" and a second lab planned for Camden. Both will test on animals. The superlab will allegedly be a level 3 lab meaning that it will hold deadly diseases such as Bird Flu. Any virus leak would be catastrophic for London, the UK and Europe as the lab will be alongside St Pancras Eurostar. There has been a mutated flu pandemic before....

from "Field Guide To The Apocalypse" by Meghann Marco

If you ask around, few people will be able to name the largest pandemic in human history. By largest I mean the most dead people in the shortest amount of time from one disease. By all accounts that would be the Influenza pandemic of 1918. In one year's time influenza killed anywhere from 20 million to forty million people worldwide. {This was before the Channel Tunnel, the underground and so on....}
This is hard to imagine when travel warnings and masks are issued for adisease which killed 800 people. While the SARS virus is feared, regular old flu kills 36,000 Americans every year...
The flu pandemic of 1918 killed ten times as many people as World War 1, and even some of those casualties were from the flu pandemic rather than the war. This was not just ordinary flu...it was incredibly infectious and killed it's hosts rapidly, filling their lungs with fluid and suffocating them. Morgues has stacks of bodies waiting to be buried and the morticans simply refused leaving families to bury their dead. Often victims would turn blue as they died, blood running from their noses and ears. The government did nothing. Surely this could not happen today RIGHT?

The Bad News.
Recent reaserach conducted on the lung tissue of an influenza victim frozen in the Arctic has confirmed that the Inflenza Pandemic of 1918 was caused by mutated BIRD FLU. Why is this important? Bird Flu is different from human flu in that it has different signature substances. Basically, a human immune system understands waht a human influenza virus is like. Because the influenza virus mutates frequently, you can never really achieve total immunity -but your body basically knows what it is dealing with. When a person contracts bird flu, the body is confused. It's not prepared. It doesn't know what to do. Your body has no defence. Thankfully, although humas do sometimes contract bird flu, it couldn't be passed from human to human...OR COULD IT? It's happened before...in 1918.
If a person contracts bird flu AND human flu at the same time, there could be trouble. The viruses could mix RNA and produce a hybrid-one with the infectious nature of human influenza, but one that the immune system fails to recognise. It's happened before. What you will have is the Influenza PAndenmic of 1918 but worse. Twenty to forty million dead before...only this time around the disease will spread much more rapidly and further afield. The virus of 1928 infected one fifth of the World' population and around one third of America. It also did not attack the very young and the very old, the way that regular influenza does. The virus's highest mortality rate was among those twenty to forty years of age.

Leading people have warned that if the "superlab" gets planning permission and is built that "there will be trouble" can certainly say that again.
Anyone who thinks that such a lab will not make a dangerous neighbour is sorely and dangerously mistaken.

How can anyone be assured that the lab security will not be breached, that an accident won't happen? This has happened before, ata governemnt facility in Pirbright Surrey where Foot and Mouth disease was leaked causing havoc, death and destruction across the UK. There have been other such leaks also. This lab must not be built for so many reasons.

Local people do NOT want the lab. There are calls for homes to be built in an area where 15,000 people are on ahousing waiting list. There is the question of wjat will happen to the Margarete Centre.

The lab will also be the World's largest ever animal testing lab housing thousands of animals.

It will be alongside St Pancras Eurostar....are you telling us that when visitors from Europe get off the train that they will happily be greeted with a monstrous lab that resembles something out of Porton Down with hundreds of angry locals and Animals Rights protesters outside? Bring it on....whoever thought this up has to be downright STUPID or dangerous....The area has already seen the bombings of 7/7 and 21/7....we will NOT stand by and watch this happen.
