Peaceful protest against National Trust goat massacre. Killing animals is an entirely unethical, immoral and a totally unscientific way to reduce numbers. Please join our protest on International Animal Rights Day

In view of the massacre of mountain goats by National Trust (see story below) we are having a peaceful protest for International Animal Rights Day, Wednesday 10th December at the National Trust head office in North Wales. Details below:

Animal charity slams Trust's cull of goats in Snowdonia
Dec 8 2008 by Eryl Crump, Daily Post

A ROW has broken out between an animal charity and the National Trust over the cull of wild goats in Snowdonia.

It is believed more than 100 goats have been killed at various sites in Snowdonia in recent weeks.

The park authorities claim numbers have spiralled out of control and accuse the goats of marauding through gardens, eating tree saplings, knocking down walls and even causing road accidents.

But animal charities claim the creatures are convenient scapegoats, blamed for damage caused by sheep, horses, rabbits and humans.

They argue the National Trust could use fences to contain them, but have rejected the measure because of the cost.

Wild goats with long coats and curved horns are thought to have roamed the hills of North Wales since the last ice age nearly 10,000 years ago.

Their numbers are thought to have increased since winters in the remote landscape became milder, meaning more kids survive.

Culling started two years ago when about 50 goats were killed at sites near Beddgelert, Harlech and Llanberis.

A further cull was carried out last year. More than 200 goats are believed to have been culled.

A spokesman for the National Trust said the goat population has risen from 166 to 450 in a decade.

"This is causing serious ecological damage and harming efforts to enhance the biodiversity of the area," he said.

The Countryside Council for Wales, Snowdonia National Park Authority and the local council have all recognised that culling the goats using qualified and experienced marksmen was "appropriate and humane", he added.

"If the population is not controlled it is highly probable that landowners and possibly third parties will take the matter into their own hands and cull feral goats in a less controlled and humane manner, potentially causing both suffering to the goats and further exacerbating the current problem," the Trust spokesman said.

But the charity Animal Aid accused the trust of rejecting the more humane method of fencing off areas of land as being too costly.

Spokeswoman Kate Fowler-Reeves said: "Goats are accused of damage to the land and to shrubs which may actually be caused by other animals – including humans. The culling of animals is not only cruel but also ineffective.

"It amounts to nothing more than a short-term stopgap, and species' populations invariably soon return to their previous numbers.

"This is not the first time the National Trust has been criticised for killing wild goats.

"It will find itself increasingly in the spotlight over this issue, especially if it is not seen to be making enough of an effort to deal with the situation humanely."

goats?

Culling is a recognised form of animal husbandry, practised for millenia. At least these goats had a free life, and will end up at the butchers, for those that eat that kind of meat. And if you do - and its still a free country - better wild than farmed.

The National Trust are a disgrace

Once again, those who are supposed to be protecting our wildlife are guilty of destroying it.

On what planet is the random killing of these goats "humane"? Particularly when fences would suffice in preventing the "marauding" of which the goats are accused.

Surely the National Trust are aware that culling does nothing to solve the "problem" of the goats (if, indeed, it is a problem). When a section of any population of animals or birds is removed, there is suddenly a greater amount of food and space for the remaining animals. This will trigger a breeding frenzy, causing the population to rise higher than it was originally!

I don't know if this massacre was due to willful ignorance or a more sinister motive- either way it cannot go unchallenged.

Old practices are ok??

08.12.2008 18:16

So in Henry's world, immoral acts that have been 'practices for the millenia' are OK. Child labour was a practice at one time, so was slavery. Just because something has been done for a long time does not make it right. Henry, get some facts, scientific evidence shows time and again that culling actually increases a species. Blaming animals for a variety of issues in common place now, so is using killing as a lazy solution. Get a conscience Henry and get educated.

Anon, I have a concience [abeit tribal] and am educated [and also de-educated]. I live in the forest and am in touch with the natural world more than most, to the extent that I see no harm in culling, which removes the poorer stock from the hill and retains the better genes. I am against fences, as they have a high carbon footprint and use mined metals. It is your suburban mindset that is the problem here.

Delusions

Oh dear Henry, you are fooling your 'educated' mind sadly. To cull a species only means it breeds more prolifically. Why do you think the marksmen kill the 'weak'., perhaps this helps your delusions. You clearly do not have a conscience and no concern for other species. May you reap what you sow The trolls are about!

Death or fences - which sounds more "harmful" to you?

09.12.2008 20:52

It does sound as though dear Henry has taken his de-education a little too far.

How is it that you fail to see that killing is causing harm, the most extreme harm you can cause to an individual? Your suggestion that it is better to kill rather than use mined metals is ludicrous at best. Particularly when, as stated above, by doing so cause a rise in the population higher than it had been originally (is the solution then to cull more?).

The marksmen do not pick out the "weaker stock". Why would they, when their aim is to reduce the herd rather than enhance the gene pool for future generations of goats to be culled?

I sincerely hope that you will take some time to research the subject before making any more nonsensical comments, backed up only by your claims to be "in touch with nature". Your home in the forest clearly has internet access - I would suggest that you make use of the wealth of information available to re-educate yourself a little.

Mad women who have not got a clue about conservation

10.12.2008 16:41

These people need to understand that the goats are over grazing the area to the detriment of the conservation of all the other species - get out and learn about conservation and understand that the countryside needs to be managed against single species.

Paul

10.12.2008 18:28

Paul, you ned to understand that killing any species only increases it. Every scientific study will show this. So it is YOU that needs to get out there and learn about conservation. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR ANIMAL ABUSE!!

What 'women' would these be policeman Paul? Not very bright comment that is it? Or are you a National Trust employee? Plenty of men involved, watch this space for the pics and report.
