Scottish parliament vote against ID

RL | 22.11.2008 17:15 | Bio-technology | Repression | Social Struggles

Members of the Scottish Parliament have voted overwhelmingly against ID cards, but the Scottish parliament has no jurisdiction over ID cards.

MSPs voted 69 to 0, with 38 abstentions, against the introduction of ID cards in Scotland. They voiced their concerns over civil liberties, data protection, the £5bn cost of the cards, and cited several European examples where ID cards had not deterred acts of terrorism.
The Scottish Parliament has no actual control over the introduction of ID cards.

It's not the ID card that's the problem

Even if the Scottish government were able to prevent the introduction of the ID that would not solve the problem. The real weapon against the people of these islands is the database that will stand behind the ID card scheme... but does not need the ID card scheme in order to be a powerful tool against the people. That database is already being networked together after the experience of GCHQ and others with these systems over the past 20 years. For these systems to be powerfully effective it does not need the ID card or its compulsion in Britain. The data mining and artificial intelligence predictive systems now being built are immensely powerful and probably five years ahead of anything currently known in academia (look up Artificial Intelligence using Genetic Algorythms - NNUGA or Multidimensional Scaling - MDS) The database is the problem - the most insidious threat to human liberties that this country has ever faced, and yet we are being primed to react to the distraction tactic of ID cards - in this age of DNA swabs ID cards are clearly a straw man. Anyone wanting to avoid the sinister gaze of big brother needs to get off electronic and non-electronic registers of all kinds, resisting ID cards is irrelevant.
