muTATE Britain has landed..

Billy Macrae | 21.11.2008 00:47 | Culture | Free Spaces | South Coast | World

Thursday 20th November saw the grand opening of muTATE BRITAIN, the largest non-corporate art space in London, located in a disused warehouse on Curtain Rd, Shoreditch.

Forget Tate Britain, muTATE BRITAIN has landed, all 4 storeys of it.
And you heard it here first...

Organised and curated by Garfield Hackett and Liam Hayhow, with the help of a veritable fleet of fellow squatters, graffitti artists, sculptors, painters and other scallywags, muTATE Britain has landed.

Located in 'Cordy House', a disused warehouse on Curtain Road, London, it has been many many months in conception and preparation. Why? Because street artists and emerging contemporary artists need a non-corporate space in the East end to showcase their wares, in the way they want to. No sponsorship, no bullshit, just amazing spaces and mind-blowing art.

Artists in residence: the incredible MUTOID WASTE company, featuring Joe Rush of robotic/ scrapyard construction fame, and festivals near you.

Also showing, in rotation over the next month or so:
Airside, Blaize Simon, Bosi, Bleach, Dscreet, Brett Ewins, Dr D, Dennis Morris, Eelus, Eine, Elle Dunn, Elph, Inkie, juice 126, Lucy Macleod, Billy Macrae, Mac 1, Mode 2, Mr Insa, 9T, Part2ism, Paul Insect, Peter Dunne, Print Club London, Pure evil, Remi, Ronzo, Roughe 1, Rowdy Rufus Dayglo, Shepard, Fairey (AKA Obey), SW1, The Krah, Zoot, and many more.

The opening night was RAMMED!....

The catch? These guys have to make it pay or they're booted out for good in early 2009...
If you want to help London's major ANTI-CORPORATE warehouse art show it's time to get down there and start muTATE-ing.

One person who ain't mentioned in this review is Wreckage international from Mutoid Waste (check out his my space) who has done an amazing job...he got all the artists to do the aeroplane panels together and did a load of talent blagging to get in some of the best artists of this scene.

Wreckage International aka Alex Wright was one of the curators/organizers/artist

Just wanted to let you know that Wreckage International aka Alex Wright, one of the Mutoid Waste Co, did a great deal of curating, organizing and art for the show. Would be cool if you could give him credit in your post about the show.

Cheers and beers,

Yep, whoops

Yep, Alex (AKA Wreckage international) did an amazing job too - basically organised an entire room, lots of grafitti etc, and was there 24/7 slogging his arse off.
Sorry for not mentioning him. I knew there would be a cock up somewhere!

Squatted?

23.11.2008 01:05

"These guys have to make it pay or they're booted out for good in early 2009..."

So it's not a squatted space, then, despite the mislead in the first line??

Please correct if I'm wrong, but if I'm right stop using squatting for your chique cred.

Er..

I didn't say it was squatted. I said it was a "non-corporate space... located in a disused warehouse".

The curators don't own the building - they are occupying it and the owners are turning a blind eye right now.

Maybe 2 or 3 people live in the warehouse, camping in rooms with padlocks on them, and they have been helped out by teams of people, some of whom are squatters from other parts of London, grafitti artists etc.

If they don't move out soon, or start to stump up cash, they WILL be squatting the place.

Perhaps if you just admired the work that has gone into this, instead of criticising the wording in such a petty way you wouldn't be such a 'stroppy old git' eh?

Teddy Badden + Dhugal Harrison..

01.12.2008 17:20

Sorry for being lame but there were so many people involved in this and two VERY important people got left out...

They are: Teddy Badden, and Dhugal Harrison.

Both helped out in a HUGE way with preparations, the opening, maintaining the show etc - Dhugal has been staying at Cordy house throughout and is too modest to get credit for what he does, and also Ted did the same, and some amazing stencils.

Okay that's yer lot.
: )
