Pirates have hijacked a Saudi-owned super-tanker fully laden with oil off east Africa

Pirates have hijacked a Saudi-owned super-tanker fully laden with oil off east Africa, capturing the biggest vessel yet in a zone where Somali pirates strike almost daily. The US Fifth Fleet said the Sirius Star was being taken to the pirate haven of Eyl, on the Somali coast, on Monday. It was captured 450 nautical miles southeast of Mombasa, Kenya.

The vessel held a cargo of as much as two million barrels of oil — more than one quarter of Saudi Arabia’s daily exports. It is owned by Saudi Aramco.
